Driving the manual tranny up a Hill question....

Hi All!

Have a Sport S on the way with a 6-speed manual tranny. Question: Does the Jeep have a hill assist in 1st gear to prevent a rollback or stall? I remember taking a driving course a few years back with some Land Rover Defenders, and they had some sort of special first gear that kept the forward momentum and engine from stalling when in first. I was just wondering if Wranglers have a similar system. Perhaps when 4wd Low is engaged?

The manual tranny Jeeps have a "hill start assist" in that the brakes stay engaged for 3 seconds when the clutch is released. It can be disabled if desired.

Make sure you press down pretty hard on the brake pedal, when stopped, to engage it.

And time your acceleration when you pull away. I usually pause for second before letting the clutch out and giving it gas...you'll get used to it. It's a handy feature, IMO.

I just tap quickly and it engages.

It works fine. Some like it, some don't. It doesn't bother me enough to disengage it. However, after a few seconds it will disengage on it's own so don't just dog it unless you hit the brakes again.

I definitely like it. Found it very useful with both off roading and traffic on inclines

Just to clarify, it does not "hold for 3 seconds". All JK's since '09 have it, both auto and manual. It works in direct proportion to how hard the brake is applied when stopped.

I like it but i have stalled out at least 3 times now because of it. Just a weird thing to get used to

Certainly takes time getting used to it, I had it on my 2010 TL and stalled out trying to get out of the dealership . Took me a few days but you will get used to it.

My JK is an auto (my first auto) and I felt the hill hold kick in yesterday it was interesting to say the least but welcome, the car behind me was right on my bumper. Glad I have it for that one day a month I drive in downtown Seattle.

It's a pain in the ass, least for me. I learned to drive a manual and all I've ever owned. It kept messing me up trying to pull away on a hill. Thank goodness it can be turned off!

sorry to revive an old thread, but i stalled today going up a hill...and i dunno y. i revved a lil high and released the clutch and felt that the jeep was still on its brakes. My car is 2 day old 2012 jku and has only 70 miles...so i'm a a newbie driving my wrangler.

will the HSA know when to release the brake, or do u have to count a couple of seconds?

Oh, it knows. No counting required. You'll get used to it real quick. I like it. Driving my YJ, without it, to the JK and never had an issue. Fortunately, when I drive the YJ I remember that I don't have it.

You don't need to wait for it to release, just drive forward and it will release when you do

I guess I am old school and always used my e-brake on really steep grades to take off from if I needed to. I don't really see the point of hill assist when every standard transmission vehicle had this old school feature to use when you want to use it. I will have to play with this once my Jeep finally gets built and the keys are handed to me.

I have driven many standards before and one other with hill assist (a 1984 subaru wagon) which worked much differently than the JKs. I was trying to get used to the hill hold, while my husband hated it. I kept trying to "give it a chance" although, when on a hill and I would go to pull out with traffic, I would be stuck for a couple seconds that I didn't have time to wait. When I wanted to go, it was still "stuck" on hill assist. I was still trying to give it a chance. My husband came home from work and said let's disable the hill hold and I was a little skeptical (new car and all) but once he disabled it, I then realized how much I hated it! He made a point that when you need to go and can't, that's what causes accidents. I'm so glad he disabled ours! (And being from Pittsburgh, there are many hills, and I am still glad he disabled it) yes, I am a woman who loves driving a stick! Hills and all!

The point of it is that you no longer have to use the hand brake. If you use the feature correctly it will only hold when you want it to. It will not prevent you from starting out and is far from something that would cause an accident.
