Driving With No Doors

That time of year. Since No Top/No Doors IS one big reason to buy a Jeep = is it legal? Some say yes IF mirrors are mounted. The Socialist Republic of Maryland has some unbelievably restrictive laws. I.e., illegal to park in the same spot for over 24 hours in Montgomery County (I was ticketed 50' from my front door and stickered for towing)!!! Some say they were ticketed in O.C., MD for no doors.

I don't think its the door problem usually its having side mirrors that are the problem. Before I started taking my doors off I got mirror relocators

Mirror laws vary by state. Check with your local BMV. As Kjeeper mentioned, most states require the rear view be unobstructed, and some require 1 or 2 on the sides. There are many ways to adhere to the law and still run doorless.

If I am not mistaken you HAVE to have doors in OC but the rest of Maryland is fine with doorless as long as you have side view mirrors.

I got ticketed for not having my seat belt way back. The a**hole even got me for having one of those stupid trees hanging for my rearview

CT. Your not supposed to have anything hanging from your rearview in most states. Cops don't really stop you just for having an air freshener on there, but will add it onto other infractions.

Granted I don't have stuff hanging in my rearview, I'd rather not have to worry about it either. I swear, some states are just stupid.

KY has mirror laws (rear view plus 1 side mirror). But I've never been pulled over or seen someone pulled over for no side mirrors.

I drive with my doors off all of the time. As long as I have a driver side mirror I am fine.

The old Dodge/Plymouth neons sometimes didn't come with a passenger side mirror from the factory.

I was just told yesterday from an old friend who has been driving around AZ for over a year without doors that all we need here is the rear view mirror. You can also stick on the little round curved mirrors to the pillar as someone else I know is doing. It's good to know that I can take my doors off just in time for the 100+ degree weather.

I got harrassed by a local PD for only having 1 mirror, he said it has to be what the vehicle was outfitted with in production, no biggie, but just to what Inferno said, check with your local BMV.

Ditto!

In Oregon, the rear view is enough, unless the view obstructed by anything, like say a spare tire that's mounted higher than normal (like mine is). Then you have to have two side mirrors. I haven't been stopped yet for mirrors or doors, and I'm only assuming that going doorless in Oregon is legal-I haven't looked into it yet.
Pretty sure Idaho has the same mirror law as Oregon. Luv being in the Northwest!

Check this older post over at JeepForum.
====LIST of STATE MIRROR LAWS==== - JeepForum.com

It states that, in MD, you are required by law to have a mirror mounted on the outside of the cabin on the drivers side. That law is the same for me here in NC. I just went with a Harley Davidson mirror that I slide in the top door hinge when the doors come off.

Don't forget the horn. Lights(head and tail), mirror, and a horn to be street legal.

Isn't it Federal is the minimum requirement, then state can add rules on top of that, then towns can add rules on top of that?

Like florida has made it illegal to have truck nuts on your vehicle...

If it is adding to the regulation(saying you also need this for legality) then yes. It wouldnt able to take away(the state says you need blinkers but not in our county).

I have heard a lot about people being ticketed in OC for no doors, not sure where the regulation is coming from.

^^^Yea, the local Governments can enforce stricter than Federal Regulations, but not the other way around.

Technically, police can probably lump the no doors into the vehicle is unsafe yada yada bs. I know a lot of cops like to speak out of their arse and make up laws. Just like my friend got a warning for not driving with shoes on. She was going to prom and took her heals off to drive and she got out at a gas station, he gave her the warning. Bunch of bull.
