Drop-Down Tailgate

Here are a couple of shots of my new aluminum tailgate:









I had it built at binks fabrication. It was powdercoated to match the factory silver and the top surface is raw aluminum that's been hit with the DA for stainless-like work surface. It's amazing at how light it is compared to the factory gate, which should hopefully make up for some of the heavy bumper and armor parts that were recently added!

It does look good, my worry, or maybe complaint, would be having to open the spare completely each time you needed to get in to the back, just seems like it would get old on a DD.

I think Swag now offers a version for the JK.
The existing hinges can be used for a swing away.

A trip thru the rubicon last summer put me in a spot where I needed a new tailgate and tire carrier:



I hate replacing things with "stock" parts, so I decided to do something custom. When out in the woods I've missed having a good tailgate I could put a campstove on or use as a workspace, etc.

The spare will go on a swing out on the bumper. The swing out isn't yet powder coated because as we are working on ideas on mounting a removable rack/basket to hold camping gear.

Here's the bumper as it shipped with the tire carrier mounted:



It will be kind of a shame that the spare will hide all the work to make the tailgate look factory. Ahwell!

Makes sense but have to imagine it cost you a fortune. Never had a pickup so I don't know what I'm missing. Did you have a spare carrier fabricated that swings?

Gotcha! That's what I was thinking, that you wanted to show the tailgate so the spare would have to go elsewhere ... I'm slow sometimes

Looks awesome! I love custom.

That looks like the Poison Spyder tire carrier and bumper. Note the webbed gusset where it meets the spindle.

And the lines of the bumper are sexy so it must be a PSC bumper.

Looks fantastic!

Swag makes a conversion kit but it doesn't look nearly as clean as yours. You might have some demand for that
