Dtc code help

Hello, CEL came on. Did the turn the key thing and the code showed up but I turned the jeep off before writing down the code. So naturally I tried it again. But now the code wont show up I just get--------- then
--done--. The CEL is still one. Not sure what I did wrong. Is there a time or mileage I have to wait in oder for the code to come back up?

Not all codes display the first time (require X many codes within a time frame before setting the display) so I'm surprised you got the code the first time and the ------- the second time. Find a friend with an ODBII code reader and see if it is still there. Depending on the state you are in some autozones will read the code for you as well as some mechanic shops. You shouldn't have to pay for it but don't get upset if a shop wants money to do it...just walk away. The other alternatives are to buy a cheap ODBII code reader($20) or the torque app($5) for an android device along with an ELM327 bluetooth device ($12). Both are amazom available and fairly cheap. Personally, If I didn't have a friend nearby I'd just buy a cheap reader as they work on almost all cars and you can use it over and over plus reset codes.

It may have also been a false alarm. If that's the case, the CEL should turn off after a few engine starts without the error popping up. You could also disconnect the positive and negative battery cable, touch them together to ground out the system and reconnect them. If there is now errors detected, the light will go out.
