Electrical Issues

So I dropped my 2012 JKU off last night at the dealer because the wipers would come on once in awhile when I used the turn signals. Also every now and then it would chime and warning lights would flash and speedometer needle would fluctuate. I have Truck Lite headlights and an SPOD installed.

The dealer told me that those aftermarket items were causing the problem and i would have to remove them so they could recheck the codes. They said they were getting low voltage codes??? The SPOD is hooked directly to the battery and not even in the Jeep electrical system and LED lights draw less then the factory headlights! What the Hell????

You have added electrical aftermarket parts, I do not think the dealer's service department is way out of line. Could be a battery going bad, too. Strange things start up when the battery drops off.

Look at this thread then ask you dealer again about it. Sometimes dealers look for the easy out.

Having added MODS to to trucks and cars for over 20 years - adding fog/spot lights or aftermarket headlights rarely cause any issues. Even if they did, a good dealer could trouble shoot the issue and determine the cause.

DEALER IS LAZY.

Thanks. I figured it was the clockspring with the wipers but dealer still says it is the aftermarket parts. @nwbronco...how does the battery drop off in the day when the lights aren't even on? Still calling BS.

What do you mean by battery drop? It goes dead?

Play nice with the dealer, find a different dealer, or call Jeep and file a dealer complaint.

Personally, if you like the dealer - take the wire off the battery from the SPOD and zip tie it back so there's no chance of it touching the battery. Unplug the headlights, after all, during the day you won't be using them. This should be plenty to settle the issue with the dealer - unless the dealer doesn't want to hunt down the real issue, in which case they will gripe about the headlights still, and maybe more.

Thanks Lusus...that is exactly what I was going to do. First time I have taken the Jeep to the dealer. Same dealer told a friend of mine that he couldn't do warranty work on his truck because he bought it in Idaho. A quick call to the Southeast Rep took care of that problem. :-) So I might just take it to a different dealer.

They go bad, cells short out. Lead plates calcify. These eat at the storage and efficiency of the battery. The amount of electronics in the JKs; you end up with ghosts in the machine when the battery wanes.

Good luck with it. Hopefully you find a dealer who is mod friendly.

Bob,

Misunderstood your first statement. Had the battery checked and it is rock solid. Thanks.

Copy that. It's all good. Did you get anyone to diagnose your problem?

I'd check the connections at the battery. The stalk switch for the wipers (known to go bad), the speedo cluster has three connectors on the backside (those are probably fine). A common link is the TIPM which is a body control module(or FCM) and power control module in one. That's why I'd look for a loose ground or bad battery connection first. The cluster has a microprocessor in it - like the TIPM, that's harder to debug.

If you can't find it you might have to install the factory lights, disconnect the spod, and wait for the problem to reoccur - then back to the dealer.

My 2012 JKU is having the same sort of issue, the wipers have come on now 4 times on their own, twice when hitting the turn signal lever down, and twice while just driving. Have you gotten any answers about your wiper issue?
Not sure if there are any other threads about this.
