Engine Decision -- replace in a 2007 Sahara Unlimited
Hello! This is my first posting. I have a 2007 Sahara Unlimited 4door, all stock. A valve lifter has gone bad and I suspect has collapsed -- very noisy, metal on metal, ugh...way beyond the ticking noise, almost sounds like a rod knocking now.
Given the effort/expense to replace the cam, lifters etc....I am opting to replace the motor. My questions:
1. Recommendations to find a re-manufactured engine or do I have the existing rebuilt? Is it worth a NEW crate engine for double the price to include new electronics such as distributor, throttle body etc.?
2. Is there a difference between the 2007 and 2008 long block as I have found a 2008, but have conflicting information on compatibility? Do they differ from model/2door/4door...? Any advantage to modifying to a newer motor -- electronics etc.?
3. This may be the opportunity to go extreme, go from stock to ROCK! If so, what should I be looking for (engine mods, performance etc.)?
What's a low mileage junkyard motor run? 2k maybe 2500? Or you could swap in a hemi for a lot more money.....honestly, I would be tempted to do the hemi swap...and get a decent transmission along with it.
Brand new Hemi swaps--when you pay somebody else to do the work--are very expensive. Numbers in the mid-$20ks are common. Google Burnsville Offroad and AEV for examples of companies folks pay $20k+ to put in new Hemis and transmissions.
That said, you can do hemi swaps with "gently used" motors and transmissions for $13k or less, and that's still paying somebody else to do the work. (See, for example, these guys in California.)
That's probably not much more than you'd pay over your trade-in on a new jeep, and you'd have a jeep with HEMI.
Another option is to call various Hemi swap guys and see if they've got a spare 3.8, since they pull them out so often. You might be able to pick up a fairly new one for just a few hundred bucks and installation would be a breeze . . . and then you could supercharge it for $5k.

If you are going to Pay someone to do the labor and work on the engine....Then I would think the "Rebuilt" 3.8L would be the cheapest route. Jerk your engine out, swap in the new one, hope it's better than your old one and drive it...Stop using 5W-20 oil !!.
You could also tear yours down, put in new rings ( right side up this time ! ) new cam bearings, new camshaft, new lifters. Do the head repairs if needed, slap it back together, hope all is well....Stop using 5W-20 oil !!
It all depends on what you want to pay for and your downtime.... "BH"
