Engine light on

Duh, I know it means something is probably wrong, but what are the possible causes for the light to be on?

Stop at any auto parts store and have the code read. Could be as simple as a loose gas cap.

They didn't do my last oil change. I used to take my Sequoia there, so it's the first place I thought of. Should I be nervous driving it?

Ask your friends and acquaintances if any of them have an OBD-II reader. It takes about all of three minutes to plug it in and read the code[s]. Then go to the internet and search for the meaning[s].

The computer sets a trouble code when a parameter is out of specification. If the drive-ability of the engine is the same as before the code, then it is most likely a minor issue or a one-time issue.

If you notice performance issues (mpg change) or if the engine light is flashing, then get it code read asap.

Make sure the CAT is not being overworked - like a rich running engine or constant misfire - that will overheat and ruin the CAT. They ain't cheap. . .

You can check the codes yourself.

The link below shows for a grand cherokee, but it works with my 2010 JK.

And how to get the codes to show up.

To check your JK Codes, use this sequence on your ignition. Insert key and turn the ignition On-Off-On-Off then back to the On position and then notice the codes given in the odometer read-out.

and they all came from here.

Wow - Hope all that was cut and paste! Thanks for the help. I took it to Pep Boys and they ran the diagnostics, found out it was an emissions issue. They couldn't do anything about that so they didn't charge me for the diagnostic. They turned off the code and changed the oil, so I just have to get the emissions checked.

What kind of issue could that be? He said it might be a leak somewhere.

Did he tell you what the code was? It is safe to drive, however you will not pass any inspections and your fuel economy may suffer.

Do not go back to that Pep Boys, they are idiots. The engine light usually means there is a problem with the emissions system. If they couldn't or didn't want to fix it, they should have either given you the code or left it on. There is nothing you can do now except wait for it to come back on, then have someone check the code. Auto Zone or Advance Auto will check it for free and give you the code.

The code might be on the paperwork they gave me. I'll check on it. As long as it isn't dangerous then it can wait a few minutes.

If the CEL is on solid, you can still drive the Jeep, but you need to find out what's wrong.
When the CEL is flashing, then you run the risk of overheating the catalytic converter if you keep driving.

That's good to know. I was afraid the whole thing would just stop working at any given moment.

It could be as simple as a loose connection. The evap canister is a rectangular black box about 3/4 of the way back, underneath your jeep between the exhaust pipe and driveshaft.
