engine squeal/whistle @ 2000 rpm

Every time I accelerate in my 09, I can hear a squeal/whistle when I reach 1900 - 2000 rpm. Other people have noticed the sound so I know it's not my imagination. I have seen some older posts and it sounded like most dealers have ignored the issue. Has anyone had this problem resolved. I wanted to have some solid info before taking it to my dealer.

I believe I have the same thing, and it remains a mystery.

Here's my post on it, tell me if it sounds familiar. I very briefly "solved" it by installing a viper throttle body (I mention that here when I talk about "Results"), but it returned shortly thereafter.

Do you have an aftermarket air intake? I have an AEM Brute Force intake and that's the only potential culprit I can identify. I could remove it for a while and see if it goes away, but I never really have the time to do exploratory tinkering like that.

My best guess is that the air flow created/allowed by the intake basically whistles as it passes through the throttle. The larger bore of the viper throttle body presented a different shape for a little while that didn't whistle, but the CPU eventually adjusted the way it moved the throttle and this brought the whistle back even with the new throttle body.

Interested to see if any others have the same experience.

I checked out your thread. I can't believe this is such a mystery! BTW, I have an automatic and it sounds like you have a manual so I would rule out transmission issues. Mine started with less than 2k miles so it should not be attributed to worn out parts. Hopefully someone out there has a decent dealer/mechanic that has solved the problem.

Have you installed an aftermarket air intake?

No, everything is stock. Still less than 3000 miles.

Yes, purchased from a dealer in April with around 325 miles on it. It was a Mopar accessories Jeep that that was displayed at meetings and shows. Dealer purchased it from Chrysler and I picked it up a couple of days later. Got a great deal.

Not familiar with that . . .

I wonder if you do have the aftermarket "Mopar" intake. Look at Page 13 of this catalog section. Any chance you see that under your hood?

I have the same sound in mine. Everything stock under the hood. Pretty sure it's air intake, but think it could possibly be a pulley. Not sure if it's a whistle or what I'd call it. Sometimes seems like it's metallic like a pulley spinning.

It could be the tensioner pulley.

Would that be RPM specific? Most if the pulley-type squeals I've heard are often right at start up or just permanent . . .

If it has been with you long enough and unsolved, one way to locate where it is coming from is to use a simple recording device like a cheap Sony digital recorder with a cheap computer type remote wired microphone. Stick the microphone under the hood somewhere and move it closer to where you suspect the noise is coming from. Take the recordings and put them up on the computer display and see if you can see the sine wave that is being generated. Once you find it, compare the recordings to see where it is the strongest. You will have located the source. This works for a lot of different sources of noise that you are trying to locate.....can you tell I'm a geek?

That would be an awesome CSI-esque way to solve it, BUT . . .

I cant speak for the OP, but my noise only happens when the jeep is in gear. So, here's my plan: I'll drive. You stand on my bumper with a recorder. We'll open the hood for you and I'll take the doors off so I can lean out and see while driving. I can really keep the sound going best on the highway.

Shouldn't take more than a few runs and we'll have it figured out!

Wow, that sounds pretty exciting Mike...right on the edge of my safety comfort zone.

Maybe you could join me out there during the test drive and operate the pedals with a 3 iron and a broom handle? That would add to the experience.

But depending on how cold it is outside, could we do it from the comfort of the crew compartment?

Probably the air intake as it doesn't have that box like most new vehicles that are designed to suppress such noises.

Just turn up the radio!
