ETC Light and Malfunction Indicator Light (code P2181)

About a week ago I had the key in acc position, listening to the radio for almost 3 hours. Without turning the key to OFF, I turned to ON from the ACC position. The engine hesitated but started and immediately the MIL and ETC light came on. I drove down the road, parked, and restarted the engine a couple times. The ETC light went off but MIL stayed on and the jeep drove a little weird. Next day ran the built in diagnostics and came up with code P2181 (cooling system performance). Both lights are now off but when I run check for any malfunctions, the same code and both MIL and ETC light flash. Once the test is done both lights turn off. Been driving fine so far but obviously something is wrong if lights and code keep coming up when I check. Help anyone?! Plan on taking it to the dealer Monday but wondering if anyone has had same experience...Jeep Wrangler 2008

My 2008 Sport had the same lights after 200 mile tow yesterday with transfer case disengaged. The MIL light stayed on after restart but the other light went out. It all went away after several starts and there was never any malfunction I could sense. This happened after another tow behind my motor home, but has not happened every time. I got the same OBD II code of P2181. I will follow for other posts to see if this means anything.

Just tonight I had the same situation as cgarci26.

I had my ignition on acc for about 2 hours while I was reloading my MyGig with about 10GB of MP3s. I also went straight from acc to start, and immediately got the ETC and MIL lights.

I also get diag. code P2181.

This must be an issue with the computer, and not the coolant system. (My coolant level and engine temps. haven't been off at all).

Just in case anyone else has this issue -- you're in good company.

Might just be cause the battery is weak from being left on for a few hours. So when you start it right after, not enough power for everything. Trips the computer for faults. If you erase the code, does it come back right after? Or after you been driving for awhile?

I think it must be just a low battery computer fault. It has happened only twice, only after towin the Jeep behind my motorhome for several hours. The error does not come back after I erase it with the OBD reader. I have to leave the ignition in ACC to tow, but may not have turned the radio off or some other ACC could have been draining the battery. My jeep never behaved badly and it has not happened again, even after a towing. Thanks for the feedback.

I believe the coolant temp sensor energizes at key on (acc)

P2181 is a coolant performance malfunction.

If the temp sensor is receiving voltage from the vehicle being key on but the temperature of the coolant system hasn't changed for an extended period of time, then it makes sense that the pcm recognizes the temp sensor was energized but isn't reading any temperature changes (no voltage change) and throws a code.

DM6156 - Sounds reasonable. Also just about as stupid a design as everything else on that engine.

BTW - The code cleared itself after a 12 minute drive to work.

Did the MIL just come on with that code? Under what circumstances did you get this code?
