EVIC and 730N Issues?

So I went out to start up the Jeep (2012) this afternoon and the 730N wouldn't go on. Seemed to have no power whatsoever. Also, noticed that there are two dashes on the EVIC where the compass is normally displayed. I can scroll through the EVIC (MPG, DTE, personal settings, etc.) but the default display is just the dashes. Not sure what happened as all was good earlier this morning. I did some quick googling and it looks it might be a power/databus issue but wanted to see if anyone else had this happen before.

Should I try any battery disconnecting?

Also should note that I have a lockpick installed but that seemed to have no issues for about six weeks now. It could be possible the power cable has come loose on the back of the 730N but does that also cause the dashes on the EVIC?

Guess I will be on the phone with the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks!

Will the lock pick negate the warranty?

I had the same issue with my 730N and the MyGig Lockpick. Sometimes, the radio would restart on its own. Sometimes the radio wouldn't work at all. Sometimes the radio wouldn't come on and the dash readout would look like yours with only dashes. Sometimes the saved "Home" location in the gps and the radio presets would reset to defaults. It was intermittent and got worse over time.

When I first intalled the Lockpick, everything worked for about 4 months. I didn't know if the radio or the Lockpick was the problem. Before I would take my Jeep to the dealer to complain about the radio, I decided to troubleshoot the problem to see if I caused it when I installed the Lockpick, if the Lockpick was going out, or if the radio was the problem.

I took the dash apart and put the radio back to stock. Without the Lockpick connected, the radio worked fine. When I reconnected the Lockpick, I noticed a bent pin in one of the connectors. After fixing the pin and reconnecting everything, ALL is good. Everything has been working for about 6 weeks now.

I'm sure it is frowned upon but I don't know the answer. It's a plug and play/bolt on device so it's easily removed without a trace of it being there (I think.) Well...other than the cameras attached to the outside.

Thanks for the info. I am going to go ahead and see if resetting the connections fixes anything. It's will be a pain but worth the shot. The CHR550 is not all it's cracked up to be with the 2012 manual. Grrrr.

Thanks again.

Not to thread jack, but you ever notice any problems with your backup camera giving you a bad picture if you have an iPod or iPhone hooked up to the CHR550 at the same time. I asked this in my own thread, but no response yet. Thanks.

My compass was doing the same thing, it was either just showing dashes or the reading was incorrect. Dealer told me it needed calibrating. This is what the dealer told me to do and it worked. Go to an area where you have room such as an empty parking lot. with the jeep in park or nuetral go to your personal settings in the EVIC and scroll down to compass calibrate. tell it yes (push the right arrow) and then drive around in a clockwise circle two or three times finishing in the same direction you started and that should fix it. Sounds strange but it worked!

I don't think you need to do this if you have the 730. Somebody with the manual handy can confirm.

I don't think his radio/gps needs calibrating because he said that his radio didn't have power. Calibrating just tells the system which way is North, so that the readouts are correct.

You are correct. It's not a compass calibration issue. I actually tried calibrating just for fun though.

So, I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the CHR550 lockpick today and no luck. Before disconnecting I checked all the connections to see if there were any loose wires back there and all was secure so that wasn't the issue. I then disconnected the lockpick and the 730n turned right on and the compass worked fine. I tried hooking the lockpick back up and no luck. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the lockpick a few times and the 730n actually powered on once with the lockpick connected but then it went dead again after a few mins. Something is definitely quirky with the lockpick. I was hoping to get in touch with Coastal today, but the tech I need to talk to is out of the office until next Wednesday. Grrrr...

I had one small hiccup with a "security code" screen after turning on the 730n without the lockpick but thanks to foo.c's thread a few months back about disconnecting the battery it was all better.

My saga continues...

Sorry you weren't able to resolve the problem, but at least it saved you a trip to the dealer. You found the problem is not the radio, but the LockPick.

I know this may be an old thread, but I had the same issue. My 730N would not do much of anything. Only response it would give is if you pressed the Open/Close button, the button backlights would barely flicker, you would see the Jeep Uconnect splash screen, hear a little bit of noise, then NOTHING. Compass also showing -- like OP.
Unplugged the Lockpick from the harness, no joy.
Removed the entire harness, the system boots up fine. Plugged the entire harness back in w/o lockpick, dead. plugged lockpick back in w/ harness, dead.

So now we'll go see what coastaltech's customer service is like, ...

My 2013 JKUR had the same results. No joy, unplugged the lock pick and everything went back to normal. Anybody have luck after troubleshooting their install?
