Experience with stock muffler delete, resonator/muffler swap?

Looking to add some growl to my new JKU 16, but dont want to spring for a full cat-back type system...

Anyone have any first hand experience with deleting the stock muffler and replacing the resonator with an aftermarket muffler?

Which muffler did you go with and how was the sound? Links to video clips of this setup get extra credit!

Any issues with letting the exhaust gasses out under the Jeep as opposed to out under the rear bumper?

Thx.

I removed the muffler, replaced the res with the Magnaflow Rock Crawler (15236, iirc, for the 2-door 3.6). Chose this one because I already had a Magnaflow dual and the sound was perfect, but it had serious clearance issues such that when I went rock crawling I'd stick the OEM back on.

Anyway, the nice deep throaty growl of the dual exhaust was replaced with a very loud, very resonant, unacceptable tone with just the Rock Crawler. Couldn't even stand it 3 days! My ears were bleeding. But I wasn't willing to give up the clearance.

Wound up going to Midas. Kept the 15236 installed, and added a small Magnaflow muffler tucked up crossways in the back, where the OEM goes. But it is very flat (maybe 3.0" thick) so that it is way up in there. The tip doesn't get in the way either. Works great.

So beware the simple single-can resonator replacement.

With a JKU, though, word is you can replace the original Resonator with the 15136, then plumb the OEM resonator in right behind it and it sounds great with the two of them. But no room for that with a two-door.

I replaced the exhaust with a few different variants. Ultimately, I was quite satisfied with retaining the OEM resonator, and swapping out the OEM muffler for a 2 chambered aftermarket. Mine is very similar to the AFE High Tuck exhaust. I can barely hear it with the hard top on. Just a touch louder than stock.

I have a Dynomax 24246 muffler in place of the factory resonator, with a Magnaflow 10416 in place of the factory muffler, and i asked my muffler shop to make me a custom tip angled behind the bumper,, so i wouldn't have the factory tip hanging right below the bumper line, I have better clearance than the factory in those 3 spots, and some exhaust growl for the soul :)
