experiences with tube half doors?

Hi everyone, first post ever. My wife and I have two jk's, a 2dr '10 and 4dr '08. Anyone have experience driving on road with any of these type of doors installed? Thanks.

Funny you should ask!

These are the Bestop Element Tube Doors.

I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for, but I like them. It's just like going without doors at all. I bought them mainly because these have the option to have exterior panels added, which effectively gives you half doors at a fraction of the cost of Mopar doors (but the weather has been too nice so I haven't installed them yet). You can also get the bags for extra space, made of the same material as the soft top, which you can mount on the inside even when the exterior panel is on.

They fit great, and the latch mechanism can be moved around slightly for a perfect fit, if necessary. You can move the mirrors from the steel doors to these, or get an extra set. I don't have them yet, but I'll get them at some point.

Thanks Jeffk42, no rattles or vibrations while on road? I've seen smittybuilt tube half doors for $399, set of front and rears. I will check the element doors as well.

You'll hear them rattle slightly going over bigger bumps, but not under normal driving conditions. They do this because in their normal, closed resting position, they can still move a fraction of an inch inward if you apply enough force to overcome the latch spring. That amount of force really only occurs over bigger bumps.

It should also be noted that these doors come with locks -- not to keep people out, obviously, but they keep the doors on your Jeep instead of in someone's trunk.

Jeff - Just to clarify, are the prices at Q-tec for a PAIR of doors, or a SINGLE door? It looks like they're just for single doors, but I can't imagine who would actually buy just one at a time . . .

No, it's for a pair of doors. Personally, I ended up ordering mine from Amazon because they were about $20 cheaper and qualified for free shipping.

MTH: Not positive what you're looking at, but the Element Doors are sold in pairs. I imagine the others are as well.

For the JK Unlimited you need to buy a set for the front, and a set for the back (different part numbers: they're not interchangeable).

Video on Bestop Element doors (although Jeff's description/review is great):

These things are so cool. Someday . . . .

What had me confused was the Quadratec site (see here). Items are described in the singular (e.g., you click the box for an Element "Door") and items in your shopping cart have a "Quantity" of "1." Regardless, good to know that it means 1 PAIR.

Also, I think it's awesome that Geoff's profile pic actually looks like an animated version of himself . . . .

Thanks.

We have that same problem with seat covers. Sold as a pair, but it's one product, one SKU number. Gets people all the time.

My avatar is stuffing pizza in his mouth too. So that's also very realistic. Wait until you see the more recent videos where I'm really fat.

Britta, on the other hand, eats salads. With something called "low fat dressing." Sounds awful.

I'd echo Jeffk42's experience. I got our Bestop element doors from Amazon - great customer service. We also got the door storage bags and found that we like having the storage bags on at highway speeds. Not much rattling if you adjust the latches correctly, but a little.

If you have access to a welder and some tubing... It's a whole lot cheaper to build them yourself. I built mine in about 2 days and have less than $35 dollars in them.

cool! I love the versatility of these doors. And I love things where I can start with a base and build up from there (hence the Jeep)

Geoff, great to have a voice to go with your posts now. BTW, the cartoon is a little off in the upper cranial area, if you know what I mean... :P

I put the exterior panels on yesterday, and the storage bags on the inside. I still have to put the weather stripping on the inside of the door, and then I'll put them back on and get some more photos.

I love riding topless and doorless, but I like the "modified" look of tube doors more than the "stock" look of doorless, plus it makes it a bit less likely when parked on the street that casual passers-by will hop in just for kicks.

My tube doors are from 6ix Offroad, a small company here in SoCal. They don't have a website, but you can find them on Facebook. These doors are very strong. They have nuts on the ends of the hinge pins to make it a little more difficult for someone to just lift them off and be gone with them. I wrapped a short strip of velcro cable tie around the door latch loops to stop the latch from rattling. With that, they're very solid, sturdy and quiet. Plus, since they're quite rare, it makes my Jeep all the more unique.

The Bestop Element doors were my second choice because of their versatility.

I'm the same way, I like doorless but the tube doors just look great.

Also, forum decency rules likely dictate that I can't say what may have happened when I saw your Jeep just now.

That thing is gorgeous.

With the skins on the half doors, and upper window curtains installed and soft top raised how is the weather seal, convenience of use? I am considering the Bestop 1/2 doors with skins and upper window curtains for my 2011 Sahara.

By skins, do you mean the hard enclosure kit, or the actual Best top soft doors?

I'm wondering about the seal as well...

also, are there nuts to the hinge pins or is the only way to keep them on the Jeep to lock them? I'm hoping they have nuts as I'd rather leave the doors unlocked at times but it's not a deal breaker...

best pricing is at amazon/com? I need color matched...

could that little bit of rattling be eliminated with some well placed cushions?

I'm wondering if the panels rattle against the tube frame? and if a little bit of cushion here and there would eliminate it as well?

are the mirrors that are sold that fit (not JK) the old style that paint never liked to stick to for long?

can you comfortably rst your arm on the tops of these doors?

so many questions.... just wanna be sure before spending 2 g's

I found these on Craigs List, don't know what kind they are, but they had mirrors on them & they do not rattle at all. We love em.

Okay, let me try and answer everything here...

The rattling completely goes away when you get the enclosures. This is because Bestop includes the weather stripping (very similar to what's on a full steel door from the factory. You put that on, and the rattles are gone. I haven't had a chance to test the seals in water, but it's pretty obvious to me that as long as you don't screw up putting them on, the seal will be effective. I can't say anything about the uppers, because I don't have them (yet).

You can't get the color matches enclosures on Amazon, but you can buy the tube doors there and then get the color matched enclosures on Quadratec. Personally, I opted for the powdercoated black because I wanted to reduce the total surface area of paint/clearcoat that I had to worry about while out in the brush.

The rattle is not from the enclosures hitting the tube doors. It's from a little give in the spring that exists when the door is closed. And it only happens when you do not have the weather stripping installed. I believe that if the weather stripping was taken off the stock doors, they would behave exactly the same way.

You can put your arm on the door, and it's slightly more comfortable with the bags, but depending on how tall you are and how high you have your seat jacked up, it may not be a useful armrest.

Well, as I said above, I haven't had mine in the rain yet, and I don't have the uppers at all. But I can tell you that the weather stripping that you put on the enclosures is just like the stuff that is on the stock doors. I'm not even remotely worried about anything getting in there.

Hopefully someone can delete the previous post, I had to take down the photos because I had screwed up the GPS synchronization. Here are the photos of my Jeep with the black enclosures installed.
