Extended Mopar warranty, worth it ?

Hi everyone

I'm picking up my new Red Rock Saturday and the finance lady has been asking if I want to get a 7 year Mopar extended bumper to bumper warranty

I guess it's really just a 4 year warranty tacked onto the original 3 year bumper to bumper warranty but they never word it like that.

Anyway originally they wanted $1950 for it and after some back and forth she dropped it $1,750 and were still going back and forth and I think she will drop it some more.

Do people buy this warranty?

Is it worth it ?

And what is everyone else paying for it ?

Trying to come to a decision soon and I could use some advice ?

Thanks

HR

Consider how the numbers look to you:

Are you in a position where you could independently cover the costs of a repair that's the size of the warranty, either with cash or with debt financed at a lower rate than the initial loan?

Are you going to keep it for 7 years, or sell it on after a few? If so, does the warranty transfer?

My wife's a certified financial planner, so I defer to her on these sort of matters. She says you would be better off to open a savings account and put the purchase price of the warranty in the account. Don't touch it unless and until a repair comes along that you can absolutely verify would have been covered by the warranty.

You're playing the odds no matter what you do, and per her this is far smarter than buying an extended warranty. There are about a million ways they will get out from under it should you ever file a claim.

Or you can do like she does, I do and just about everybody else does. Don't buy the extended warranty. Don't open an account either. Just hope for the best.

For example, my last Wrangler I bought used at 3 years and traded it in at 10 years. Over that time, I probably spent around $2,000 in repairs above and beyond routine maintenance. Those repairs occurred during its 8th and 9th years, so a seven year warranty wouldn't have covered them anyway. But they did help convince me it was time to trade it in.

First, there are probably 35 threads already discussing the merits of an extended warranty. However, I'll toss my 2-cents in on this one, too. :)

Back in 2013, I purchased a Mopar Maxcare lifetime bumper-to-bumper extended warranty for our JK. At the time, it was around $1,950. I bought it because for every Chrysler vehicle we've ever owned, an extended warranty would have paid for itself by the time we sold it. I wasn't going to take a chance with our Jeep, especially when I kept reading that their reliability wasn't the greatest.

Thus far, our 2013 Sahara has been very good as far as reliability. We plan on keeping it at least 10 years. During that time, I have peace of mind knowing that I will never have to pay more than $100 for a repair. The warranty cost me less than 55-cents per day - well worth it, IMHO.

Before you give any money to your local finance person, give Tom a call at the contact info below. He specializes in the lifetime warranty but he sells the 7 year and others, too. Hayes Jeep is a supporting vendor here on the forum and I have not found any other place that sells the Mopar extended warranty for a lower price than them.

Thanks for the info

I gave Tom a call and he was definitely cheaper than my dealer and I would also recommend him to anyone else looking for a Mopar warranty.

I pointed out to my finance girl the price difference and she some how managed to bring her price down too so I went with them just to keep the paper work easier plus she got me a good finance rate so I had to throw her a bone.

So I'm covered for 7 year 75,000 miles with a $100 deductible, and if I sell it before that expires it's transferable to the new owner with a $50 fee.

For other people comparing prices make sure your comparing apples to apples.

They have different year warranty's with different mileage with different deductibles.

Example: 7 year 60,000 mile $200 deductible or a
7 year 75,000 mile $0 deductible will obviously cost more

Thanks again for the info

IMO, the only EW worth considering is the Lifetime MaxCare warranty and then, ONLY if you are 100% certain you will keep the Jeep until it runs into the ground. It's a great deal for very long term owners.

Chrysler is betting that you'll trade, sell, lose or total the Jeep, long before the EW pays off.

I went with the 6 yr extended warranty. I wasn't planning on it, but they threw it at me at closing and I was so excited I said "sure". I paid $1,200 and something for it. Probably not worth it...but I got a lot better deal on the Jeep than I was expecting so I felt like I was paying with house money.

I got the mopar care which extended the bumper to bumper 5/100000 and yes it has been worth it for me. So far with 2 years and 47000 miles left on the warranty it has almost paid for itself. repaired heated seats and I am sure they will go out again, new radiator. If I get a new jeep I will again get the extended warranty. I have owned over 25 new cars and trucks and never would have recommended an extended warranty on any of them but on a Chrysler product it is worth it for me.

I agree with the max care lifetime warranty if you plan to keep it longer than 7 years. I purchased it with my 2017 for about $2k. Well worth it in my opinion.

IMO; an extended warranty is only as good as your local dealer. Many good dealears that want help and make some money. Then, there's bad dealers that don't want the sometimes reduced payout of warranty work (especially when they're booked solid with non warranty work), or the hassle of tracking down issues that aren't common.

Then go to a different dealer. If you get the MOPAR factory warranty it's universal. You could even contact FCA and they'll point you in the right direction or look into it. If you buy their "sanctioned" factory warranty extension and the local dealer is acting funny they'd probably not want the reputation of selling warranties that their own dealers won't accept.

Personally, every extended warranty I've had has paid for itself several times over. Maybe the guys who say not to get one will come over and fix an issue for $100 for you.

Hey there,
I had the same warranty offer for 7yr 75k for $1900. I worked the finance guy to $1300 and decided not to take it based on the results here on this forum. Lol. He was pissed.
I could later on decide to get an extended or lifetime warranty from Chrysler online if I wish.

We have the lifetime warranty, and one month after our three year warranty ran out, we had a oil pressure sensor go out. Something over $500 cost of repair. We paid the $100 deductible. A couple more of these, and our warranty will pay for itself. The only caveat is we are old, and we might not last seven more years.

I never buy an extended warranty. Why do you think dealers push them so much? Because the odds are in their favor that they will make money on it. There will always be examples of someone that was glad they had it, but the majority of the time it is a better deal for the dealer than the buyer.

The warranty only pays if you need it and the repairs exceed the cost of the warranty. For some people it's a grand slam, others a strikeout. For the dealer and the car maker its a win. Bottom line is only you can decide if it will be worth it or not. I've been passing on them since I bought my first new vehicle in 1984. At the present time I'm well ahead. I can say in all honesty I have thought about it for my 2016 Rubicon, but I haven't pulled the trigger.

I was under the assumption you could purchase the extended warranty up to the time the factory warranty ran out.
If this is accurate, I would wait to purchase the warranty if you want one.

#21 ·
You can, but the price goes up after 12 months or a certain amount of miles (whichever happens first). Forget the exact miles. Maybe 12K or something like that.

I just purchased the lifetime Maxcare for my 2017 Hard Rock. Also confirmed with Chrysler that the 2 inch Mopar lift will not void the warranty and also that the Mopar lift components would also be covered by the Maxcare warranty. My dealer told me this, but I wasn't positive so I called Chrysler direct and they confirmed it.

Got an Awesome deal from tom at Hayes Jeep. I am pretty sure they are a site sponsor as well.

yes price goes up if you go beyond 12 months and 12,000 miles also each April they have been raising the price of the warranty.

I just traded my 14 wrangler it had 53000 miles on it and in the last 1000 miles had a bunch of stuff crap out in the last month I had radiator, oil filter/cooling housing, heated seats and something else I cant think of right now. My dealer fixed the oil filter housing under the drivetrain warranty but some have reported that their dealers are not fixing it under the dt warranty. the Radiator was $700 the seats over $300 so right there I was at $1000 and my warranty cost $1200 (bought in oct 13) so I am certain if I had kept my jeep for another 2 years and 47,000 miles it would have certainly paid for itself.

I will be hitting Tom winkels up for an extended warranty on my new one prior to April. He did tell me the above info on time and mileage and rates going up. He is much cheaper than what my local dealer will do. I got the quote from my local dealer when I got my new jeep and they would not budge on the extended warranty unless I wanted to go second party which are total rip offs.

Somewhat off track a little bit from the OP but I have to ask. I got contacted directly by Jeep via postcard regarding extending my warranty. Is this the same thing you all are talking about and if so, is the price negotiable?
What's the difference between buying it from the dealer vs jeep directly?

#25 ·
Price is definitely negotiable. I got the 7yr. 100k with $100 deductible for $1050
Then got paint and fabric protection plus tire and wheel protection for another $300. Normally don't buy any of this but since was for my 16yr old thought it was worth it. Hoping it will get her through Med school. Interesting thing about the tire and wheel protection is that it will cover whatever wheels and tire you put on the vehicle even aftermarket. Was very surprised to here this.

It depends on the company. If you do cancel, usually they subtract the prorated amount.
What I found for the best price is this -

when you go to buy a vehicle (especially if you have cash or private financing ready to go) you talk about bottom line pricing. Get them to give you the best length of warranty that they'll do. Get to see your contract... But don't sign. Look carefully at the amount they offer for the extended warranty. If they didn't give you the unlimited warranty the price listed IS the price of the unlimited warranty. They charge you the wholesale price of the unlimited warranty but only give you the lower tier warranty and pocket the difference. Write down the amount they're charging and the Jeep's VIN.

Leave the dealership without signing. They can't make you sign the contract.... They also can't say that the price is for right then, that's an illegal high pressure sales tactic that is outlawed in every state. Check your local laws but, at the least, they have to honor the price for 48 hours. Call MOPAR and talk to an extended warranty sales rep and ask if they can get you an unlimited warranty for a few bucks below the price the dealer offered, but don't tell them that the dealer offered price X, it's just a price you want. Don't forget the VIN. They will give you a quote, quote reference number, and the rep will give his name. Return to the dealership to continue negotiations on the bottom line price. When you feel like you can't get any lower tell them to get the paperwork together. But just before you sign circle back to the issue of the warranty and price. Tell them to call your rep at MOPAR and tell them you want to use MOPARs unlimited warranty and you already have the price... Which is (within dollars) of the price they already put on the contract, and they just need to contact your rep with you price quoted for that vehicle. If they say they won't swap out the warranty on the contract for MOPARs own unlimited warranty get up and walk out because they are probably screwing you somewhere else too.
Everything they do at the dealership is to swindle you and they are scared shitless at the idea of you leaving the lot without buying anything.
