This guy Alan has some cool products, but it is clear that nobody likes his newer design of the rear side panels on the 4-door JK. It is understandable that he would want a universal item that would fit both 2- and 4-door, but after reading this entire thread, it is amazing that with all the negative feedback from people about the new design vs. old design that he is keeping with it. He is leaving the door open for somebody else to easily put out a better design.

I hadn't been following this thread very closely and I just now saw that he changed the design. Really bad move, in my opinion. As I told him when I bought the originals, and as I posted in the original post here, the beauty to the first design was that you could store stuff behind the panels. That is obviously not an option any more. Dumb move, Alan.

Another rear door table solution is the Vector Off-Road MP Table

Got my GEAR Overhead Console in yesterday and got her installed with my Galaxy DX949 taking up half the space. The cb is mounted directly to the backplate for the console with slits cut for the bracket. Install of the console was easy and it comes with sleeves for the pipe clamps so it doesn't scratch the paint on the roll bar.

I ordered the side panels also. Not sure if they are going to be my liking. Need time to mess around with them before I make up my mind though.

Really happy with the job he did on the tailgate for me!

I just got my back panels and they are closed. I really wanted the open ones. Very well made. He even now offers powder coat for 4.00 more.

They are the new design with the closed top. I just spent about an hour flipping the support bracket, using different hole etc.

Let's just say I am going with plan B on using this area for storage.

If someone plans on using them for molle panels only, then they should be fine. Don't plan on making use of the space behind them though.

New style is horrible. Old style has more storage capability

Agree, but my understanding is that he made a design change to facilitate in production (and cut complexity / complexity for him). I'd rather pay the few dollars more and get the older style, but he didn't give us that option.

The redesign allowed him to make one piece work for 2 door and 4 door. I have the redesign and it's great, no complaints.

But this is one potential customer that won't purchase the redesigned. He may have cut production cost and time, but how many sales is he losing?

I've had the redesigned rear panels on my 4dr for a few months now, and they just plain suck. Not only did we lose the extra storage space, they also slip and pivot all over the place if you bump them -- since they're now mounted with just one bolt.

Simple physics tells us that they'll pivot if mounted with just one bolt and not locked in place using some other means.

When I lower my soft top, the panels get knocked completely out of place and pivot like 45 degrees.

Seriously, they do look good, but they're functionally horrible.

Don't think they were meant for use under soft top, only hardtop.

The old design, using two mounting points, would have worked just fine with a soft top -- they wouldn't move for any reason.

Again, the newer single bolt version allows them to pivot out of place at the slightest touch.

The shitty thing was that his advertisement still had the old design in the photos when I placed my order. When I first received the redesign, I went back and forth with the seller over email and he absolutely refused to send the older version instead.

It's really a shame that he completely changed the design. I wouldn't recommend the new ones to anyone!

That really stinks. I may contact Alan to see if there is any way at all the old design could be had, otherwise, I will stick to the tailgate attachment only. I wonder if he's aware of the new issue.

He should be aware since I wrote several emails to him on the matter six months ago.

He absolutely refused to make me a pair using the old design -- even when I offered him a bunch more money -- so I wish you the best of luck!

I was going to order the set this weekend, but now seeing this "new and improved" design. I'll pass. Old style was much better.

The old design panels look like they'd have the same issue as the new ones when taking the top down.

I uninstalled my panels because I could not get the soft top to fold fully down into the bed of the Jeep as the panels would block the soft top bars from folding down fully.

Any pics of the old design with the soft top down?

The issue of the panels getting in the way and preventing you from folding the top all the way down affects the 2dr.

The issue of them simply pivoting out of position when the bars rest on top of them affects the 4dr.

IOW, the old design would work fine on the 4dr since the top could still go all the way down, and the bars would simply rest on top of the panels. (They don't interfere with lowering the 4dr top itself).

Well I am game then.

If Alan decides to start selling the original design I'd order another set. I'll shoot him an e-mail to check this thread if I still have his address from when I did my last order.

Ordered mine Monday with custom logo and shipped out yesterday. He is quick. I too prefer the old design but I guess I'll try to make it work or something.
