Rain in Las Vegas......not good. A lady slid into my rear end at a stop light a few minutes ago. It was a jolt....nothing too bad. Anyway, I get out and her Taurus is crumpled pretty well. Not too bad, but she can't get it into reverse. So there was some damage. I have about 4" of lift and 35 KO2 spare. My Jeep seems to be OK. Looks like her hood contacted the bottom of my spare tire. Didn't contact the bumper from what I could see in the dark. The tailgate and glass seem to be functioning properly. I'll take a closer look in the morning, but are there any telltale signs that would indicate frame/suspension damage? I don't want to go thru the hassle of taking it to a body shop or dealership.

Thanks

Definitely get it to a good body shop, if she hit the spare, the force was transferred to the rear door, which is not meant to handle impact. You'd be surprised at the damage they can find, and what it will cost to fix. Better to find it now, than when you go to sell/trade it in.

I agree, take it to a shop. my 97TJ was lightly tapped from behind by a lady in a similar situation. Cops showed up, said there was no damage but a ripped tire cover. Within two days, the rear tailgate was so hard to open and close that it took 2 people. If you looked at it, it looked like nothing was wrong.

Unlike unibody construction with crumple zones, body-on-frame construction transfers the shock along the frame.

Have a shop put your Jeep up on the hoist and check all the attachments to the frame, axle mounts, shock mounts, transmission mounts, engine mounts, to make sure nothing got bent.

Good luck.

I agree with everyone. Especially when its going to be on her dime!
Have that jeep gone over with a fine tooth comb and look for ANY possible damage no matter how minor.

After opening and closing the tailgate about a dozen times the tire started to rub against the bumper. Removed the spare and you can see a small buckle in the tailgate. So it is going to take some work and money to fix. Tera Flex tire carrier needs to be changed. Hopefully nothing more than that.

Yep, you may be surprised at what is damaged.
As Aldo said, you're dealing with a body on frame vehicle, and unfortunately the body was hit, not the bumper/frame, which can shift many of things.

Hope all works out, I'm no trying to Debbie The Downer, but I wouldn't minimize this.
