Finally fixed my license plate bracket

It kept bothering me the way the license plate bracket is designed for the jku. I like to put a frame around my license plate and couldn't do that. But it's all done now.

I bought half inch self tapping screws for the right side and screwed them through the nubs. I ground those half inch screws a little more as they would hit the jeep body as the width of the bracket on the right side is very small. I actually removed the whole bracket to ensure I don't hit the jeep body with the screws.

Also ordered this skinny black frame and fits perfect below the little light.

That's the same frame I bought for mine... except that when I installed it I used the screws that held the dealer frame, which turned out to be just a little too big for the black screw head covers to fit over.

I'm hesitant to get smaller screws, as the holes are already in the jeep, and I want it to stay tight. Guess I need to look for the same thread size with a smaller head.

I did what sunnykk did. Bought some self tappers, cut the sharp ends off so they wouldn't exceed the plastic mounts on the right side of the plate bracket, and mounted mine with a frame and clear plastic cover.

My 2012 JK came with a bag of screws in the glove box that look like they are for the plate.

they are only for the left side. The right side does not have any holes and if you use the screws they gave you, you will make a hole in the body behind the bracket on the right side.

I bought the same exact frame at auto zone and had the same problem with the bolts. I hit the body of the jeep as I was screwing it on I just backed it off. I haven't had chance to cut off the tips and rescrew it. But the frame fits perfectly.

well i'm glad i found this thread. i thought i was crazy when i saw the dealer had only installed two screws top and bottom on the left side of the rear plate assembly when I went to remove the dealer advertising frame crap.

what the hell is Jeep thinking? this is the stupidest design I have ever seen. who builds a plate assembly that is only wide enough to fit screws on one side? so it's ok to be flapping in the wind unless we mod it is the Chrysler/Jeep mantra on this?

i was quite pissed off yesterday when i had to put the dealer frame back on to hold my temp tags because a normal frame with screw holes both on top only won't work in this (unless I want one screw holding in only).

thanks Jeep.

I agree it's a stupid design, but there are two tabs on the right side that you can stick the edge of the plate under that keep it from flapping.

I used a dremel and ground those two tabs off when I did my mod.

Thanks for the update, got my plate in this week and will be doing the same, I am glad someone noticed the screws were long because I am sure I would have ran them in and put unwanted whole in my body

Rear License Plate Bracket

What were they thinking designing a method of mounting a rear plate that is different from every other vehicle on the road!?!? You simply CANNOT buy a frame with holes only on the left side. This poor design cost me a new rear window (soft top). I picked up my brand new vehicle the day I was leaving town. The paper tag blew off in just a few hours on the highway. I had to SCOTCH TAPE a replacement tag to the inside of the rear window as an emergency-on-the-road fix. Guess what...the scotch tape adhered permanently to the vinyl window and actually melted it a little! DO NOT USE SCOTCH TAPE ON SOFT TOP WINDOWS!!!
