Fire! Fire! Fire! Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon

My 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon blew up last month and I found seven pages of video on Youtube of burning Jeep Wranglers. Search for "Wrangler Fire"...
If you or someone you know had this happen I would like to hear from you. ballw95@gmail.com
Chrysler told me there was "No indication of a manufacturing defect".

The jeep in that picture has an aftermarket bumper. So, we can assume it has other items aftermarket. If something electrical was installed - stereo, lights, etc - was installed incorrectly then it could've started the fire.

Looks like gas burning in the parking lot. Is that what happened, a gas leak ignited?

I agree, does look like gas is on the ground and burning. But the fire probably caused the gas leak, imo. What are fuel lines made of? Isn't the whole tank plastic anyway?

The recall was for fires caused by impacts breaking the fuel tank, like crown victorias and pintos. The recall only calls for them to install an offroad skidplate.....which most of our jeeps have from the factory in the first place. Mine does. This jeep does not look wrecked to me?

I'm waiting for more info from op!!

I have seen and investigated several hundred vehicle fires in my former career. A car fire that involved and in a densely populated area with bystanders strongly implies accelerants.

The recall I read was about debris getting trapped in the crossbar or skid plate around the transmission areas that would catch fire...

The picture from the front I took with my my phone.
The picture with the ambulance was posted to twitter by someone driving by.
The Jeep immediately burst into flames after a collision. I attached another picture so you can see the limited damage to the bumper.
I was going straight and the other driver tried to turn in front of me but hit me head on. No winch and no additional electonics.

That bit about being in a collision may have been an important fact to share in your first post. A shorted car battery may cause a fire. A broken fuel line may cause a fire. I'm sure their are many things that can go wrong once a vehicle is smashed. Be happy you walked away from it.

I see the fire extigusher didnt help. I had a fire but mine was due to a bad install of my winch ata local shop. I had the fire out quickly, within 5 minutes but it still did $11,000 in damage.

I learned that if you jeep catches fire...just let it burn. Its better to total it.

So there was a collision involved? That's an entirely different ballgame and something you really should have mentioned initially.

Also, you can google or youtube any well known vehicle name + "on fire" and find just as many examples.

I hope OP will share fire marshal investigation report. Fire after a relatively minor collision is not normal nor acceptable. It will be interesting to see where did the fire start. In any case, cars are designed to minimize the risk of fire in case of collision and crash tests include specific criteria to assess it. After a frontal crash test, the vehicles are slowly rolled 360 degrees to see if there are any leaks of flammable fluids - gas, oil, transmission fluid. A ruptured fuel line or gas tank resulting in a leak automatically means that the car has failed the crash test and cannot earn 5 stars rating.

So this definitely has to be investigated by the manufacturer to find out if it is was a one-of due to a specific unique reason (defective part, unauthorized modification, etc.) or if it a design defect.

Agreed,
I was tempted to close this thread based on that (lack of initial) information, but we'll keep it open to see if something plays out from a safety standpoint. Vehicles should not catch fire in minor collisions.

I see aftermarket wheels and aftermarket front and rear bumpers, hopefully those did not play into fire.

So I checked the old interwebz and there are a million videos about Wrangler fires, including one video that I'm pretty sure was just created by this lady to get more money in a settlement. However, the majority of these appear to be the cause of major accidents or faulty aftermarket electrical connections. I know there was the one recall for the fuel tank area.

This, however, won't sway my decision to buy my Wrangler when it comes in. Glad OP is ok, and hopefully this is some isolated issue.

This thread is pointless. Any car could catch on fire in an impact.

Oops, thats a seperate recall. There were both. Neither one apply to my jeep.

But really, don't people check for debris under their cars?

But it shouldn't. Fire prevention in case of an accident is specifically covered by DOT NHTSA rules and certification criteria. Compliance is part of government crash test program.

Briefly, here is how it's done. Before the crash test, the car (gas tank, engine, transmission, etc.) is filled with non-flammable fluids. The crash test is performed. After the crash test the car is placed in a "cage" and slowly rolled 360 deg. Any leaks are measured and inspected. Any leak of flammable fluid such as gasoline, oil or transmission fluid that could potentially result in a fire is deemed unacceptable and the car fails to meet minimum government standards. There are similar criteria for side and rear end crashes, as well as tests performed by IIHS. Fuel lines, oil hoses, etc. are designed to accommodate deformation during crash and the car structure must be designed in such way that these lines and hoses aren't ruptured. Also, deployment of airbags should shut down the engine and fuel pump, and the engine cannot be immediately restarted.

Bottom line, if a car catches fire after a minor impact, something is definitely wrong. It could be a defective part, a bad mod, or a one-in-a-million event (like a part from the other car detaching and hitting in exactly the wrong spot). Or it could be a design defect that could lead to a recall.

Saying that "any car can catch fire after impact" is not correct, unless the impact greatly exceeds certification criteria.

Now I am even more confused. The Jeep in the first pic looks black. The hood on the Jeep in the second set of pics is white. The op said he was hit head on, but doesn't look like bumper has a scratch?
