I agree first car def go used. My first car when I was 16 was brand new I narrowed down to (not sure if you remember these) a Eagle Talon and Wrangler. My dad told me get the jeep I went with Talon. Fast forward 1 yr later flipped my car over and I swore I could handle new car. Not doing anything dumb just cones down to time and experience behind a wheel. Like others have said there is a good chance with no experience that you may get into a fender bender or two or three lol. Save the brand new jeep for your second vehicle

PM "Quadratec" on here. He will give you a great price on a TJ top.

Look here:

IF you need full hardware included, and want tinted windows, with a top that goes all the way back get this: Bestop 54720-15 - Bestop® Supertop® NX Soft Top with Tinted Windows without Upper Doors for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

If you want one that stays on, but all the windows come off, like a bikini, get this: Bestop 56820-15 - Bestop® Trektop NX for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

Do you just need fabric? Because you can get that too.

It's like renting a home, or a apartment, at the end of the month, all that you will have is a receipt! It's a bad idea, don't do it!

Look for a used Wrangler. craigslist is where I would start looking. Make sure that you have somebody that is Jeep smart to look it over with you, because many have been ongoing abused. Go to the Kelly Blue Book, so that you understand a fare price to pay.
Take your time and do your research carefully.

The hardware I have is perfect, it's the one that goes all the way back but the fabric has a tear and isn't in great condition so I would only need the fabric

This: Bestop 79139-01 - Bestop® Sailcloth Replace-a-top™ with Tinted Windows for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

I think there are other brands/models that are cheaper.

PM Quadratec and he will tell you what they have.

Ask the TJ guys what they use, this is the JK forum (AKA newer Wranglers)

By the time the OP is old enough to drive its possible that buying a used JK would be fairly cheap, like an 07 or 08. Unless your parents are gonna take the hit for the price of your car, i would keep the price range no higher than 10k. If you could find a YJ in good condition and mod the hell out of it, youll be the coolest kid in school :P

For all we know the 2016 wrangler redesign could ruin the wrangler forever and drive up the price of used JKs.

A sweet sound system is going to require a lot of planning for protecting it for water damage if you ever want to ford a river or leave the top down overnight. I'm getting ready to put a sound system in my jeep and am a bit tripped up over amp placement.

Buy a 4x4 quad - it might hold you over
Anything on craigslist "might" be a scam. I replied to a house for rent ad once on craigslist and the guy told me hes in west africa, gave me a 65 digit phone number to call him, said he'd mail me the keys when i sent him first months rent......................... everything looked legit until i emailed him.....
That ads probably legit...

Lease was paid for. Lease ended and he couldnt cough up the cash to buy it and couldntve gotten financing without a job, and they only wanted $3000 or something like that. So didn't get to keep it. If he had bought it and bought the same disability coverage it would have been paid for after a year and a half or so!

So yes, never lease.

it's impressive that you want something and you plan forward on how to get it.
I would warn against spending too much. Jeeps have maintenance needs and like all vehicles will have repairs from time to time and insurance/gas costs. don't be a slave to your vehicle as opposed to thinking about your future.
don't buy anything on payments at this age - also , pretty sure that at 16 you can't legally sign such a contract. get an idea of what your running costs will be and make sure you can meet them without jeopardizing any future plans (college for example)
Jeeps are great fun, also a little less stable than some other means of transport, you don't want to roll your car the first week out of exuberance.

like already said - block heater not needed in southern Michigan, Hardtop good for quieter ride - but you're young, soft top or no top and loud music will be just fine!

If you can, get a summer job in a Jeep dealership washing cars or light shop work - then take your pick of trade-ins with expert advice and maybe employee discount, plus learning how to fix/maintain on your own.

for teen drivers, the annual cost of insurance during the first few years is probably the most expensive part of the deal.

so OP should look into the insurance cost by model (YJ/TJ/JK) and factor that in if there's a big difference between them

if it were my kid, I'd want him in a TJ (or XJ) with driver's side airbag minimum

Why would having an explosive device in the steering wheel be a good thing?

because the likelihood of death in an auto accident goes down significantly with a a functional airbag(s) and proper use of a seat belt.

Statistics are skewed by those industries to protect profits
