First DIY oil change with concerns...

So I changed my oil today at 17,700 miles. I had already decided since I am doing it myself I will take a sample of it and send it in for oil analysis. With that I can mointer the internals of my engine, as they test for thickening(caused by excess carbon for example), fuel dilution, the rate at which the oil is breaking down and other contaminates. I will be doing a falling ball test on the oil as well for immediate results.

So my oil change was due at 17,750. Well oil was like water I know 5w30 is thin. But as soon as I seen it I was concerned, first thing I did was smell it and it has a very heavy smell of fuel. So I will be for sure needing those test done. But anyone else here have this problem with their 3.6? I cut open my old filter and it looked really good, no metallic shavings that I could see no debris that I could see.

How many times have you changed your oil in 17,700 miles, or is this the first change?

every 5 or less up till now had the dealer doing it, had a few changes done early so got it off the even numbers.

1st oil change was done at 4k something was in for radio problem and they changed oil early.
2nd was done a little early as well same with the 3rd I have never went over 5k miles on an oil change since owning it.

Should not smell strong of fuel. Used smell yes, overwhelming fuel smell no.. Big difference.

I will.. just posting for everyone else, but been thinking back surely the rings are not bad. but maybe a stuck injector. I about a week ago where the hose going from the top of the air box to the back of the intake manifold was disconnected. Guess when the dealer checked my filter hey forgot to hook it up that was about 5k miles ago and hose was really dusty inside.

If you had the dealer doing your changes then the problem could be anything... Completely wrong oil used, or no oil changed at all. It's good that you're now doing the changes yourself.

how does it taste? you know the taste test is very accurate, Just kidding lol.

Here is my prediction (I have sent many many samples to blackstone labs over the years) they are going to say extend your oil change inteval another 1500-2000 miles and then send in another sample. they are going to say everything is looking good and no engine problems are evident. They might say your silica level is a little higher then normal (depends on how long the air box lid was ajar). I have had oil that smelled like gas and thought I was running rich and that was not the case. I will be interested to hear back, who are you using to do the analysis?

Cool going to be sending my sample to Carter Cat. in Norfolk Va. At work we send them a lot of samples and they give massive details. Test kit and test is about $14 dollars.

Unfortunately you cannot tell by smell, color or taste what condition your oil is in. Let the lab tell you IF anything is wrong. 5-30 is supposed to be thin, 5-20 is even thinner. The oil in my Jetta Tdi will turn jet black in less than 5 minutes after a new oil and filter change. It looks and "smells" them same even after 30k on the oil.

Yes the inside of the engine looks new even at 340k miles. Thanks Amsoil!
