First impression of 8500lb winch from Rugged Ridge

Winch in Question: Amazon.com: Rugged Ridge 15100.01 8,500 lbs. Winch with Steel Cable: Automotive

Purchased this winch and installed it myself today, I figured it would take about an hour and a bit to install. Unfortunately I had deformed and missing parts in my package which slowed down the process.

The Instruction Manual was completely and utterly useless, it needs to be totally rewritten, it's full of misinformation and bad information. After getting the winch installed and slightly jimmy rigged due to deformed and missing parts, the time I was waiting for.....

Clicked the button on the remote.. 0 power, nothing, nada. Redid all battery connections a few times, was getting super frustrated. Ended up calling support and they knew right away my issue

"the remote is tricky, you must push it down and give it a quarter turn to the right for it to work" Boom, did that and it was working.

Was this in the manual anywhere? Nope. This is why the guy knew right away my problem.

Frustrating day to say the least, I was ready to get my shipping label and Rma # and order the WARN winch.

Your comment about "slightly jimmy rigged due to deformed and missing parts" concerns me - at full tilt there is a lot of potential energy in that line (read deadly) - what was jury rigged and what was deformed and/or missing?

In general winches are not complicated - 4 bolts to mount, bolt on the fairlead, 2 cables to battery (hot and ground). You redid the cables a "few times"? once should have proven a connection problem or not.

Here are the instructions, they look pretty good to me http://www.omix-ada.com/instructions/15100.01.pdf

So what are you giving a quarter turn to? the remote has a simple switch - in and out? just curious

Yikes yeah I'd be seriously worried about any type of rigging anything when it comes to a winch! Cable like that can definitely kill or seriously injure you or someone else!

I wonder if he is talking about the power switch on the control handle mentioned on page eight, step three where they mention to make sure it is off before connecting the remote? hmmmmm

He is referring to connecting the remote to the winch. You have to press in and turn a quarter turn to get it to work. My SIL had the same problem last week on his new Rugged Ridge 8500. I told him to push and turn and it will work. He said no directions to do this was included.

So the remote goes on like a twist lock? I can't comment because I have never seen it but I would imagine looking at the male and female ends that it should be obvious?? Don't hate me for that please, just thinking out loud perhaps - and yes there is nothing I saw in the manual showing that operation that I could see.

But back to the deformed jury rigged part process ... Hopefully he is talking the solenoid mount or something similar

Sorry Guys, let me clear this up. I originally was posting from my iphone.

1) The missing and deformed pieces all were in regards to the mounting kit for the solenoid box. I could not side mount it like i originally wanted because the bracket was deformed. I had to go to the hardware store to make it mount over the middle because it was missing the brackets there as well.

2) The winch bolts were missing washers, so I had to go buy those.

3) I only checked the battery connections a couple times because you can plug in the remote like you would plug in anything and you get 0 power. Nowhere in my instructions does it say you have to push it in and give it a quarter turn. When I called the place for support, you could tell they get that question 10x a day because it was the first thing out of his mouth and it worked.

At the end of the day, I think I would have that warm fuzzy feeling if I paid the extra 150 and bought the warn.

I bought the exact same winch and had almost the exact same experience. Super frustrating.

Once I got it all figured out, though, now it works like a charm!
