First Jeep

Just purchased a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara - low mileage - one owner - certified - warranty, etc.

I am assuming that everyone here loves their Jeep or they would not be on this site. But I am hoping to try to get some responses to this that can be somewhat unbiased.

I know that Jeep has been around for years, my Dad actually had one of the original Willis Jeeps! They are for the most part no nonsense vehicles, tough, dependable, etc. Then why am I seeing on a lot of reviews that are out there saying: I'll never buy another Jeep, big mistake, terrible engine, no get up and go, noisy, etc.

I went out on a limb to get this Jeep, I wanted something I could use for a variety of things, back and forth to work, handle the snow without a problem, could take on wildlife drives around our area with my camera and not worry about whether it could handle it or not, something fun for the summer, on and on and on. It's not a luxury vehicle, I don't expect it to handle like a luxury vehicle, I don't plan on racing it on the freeway.

Just please tell me I didn't make a mistake. Are they reliable vehicles or not. Can I expect to get many years of use out of it as long as I take care of it?

Please......

Welcome aboard and congratulations! I think the fact there are what thousands of members here is all the answer you need. The new engines actually are much peppier than I would have expected in a Wrangler. Buckle up and go out and get to know your Jeep!

Congratulations and welcome to our little world.

Keep in mind we are all Jeep enthusiasts and you'll see people post more about issues and problems but there are thousands of people out there with no problems. The good thing is that reading about other posters issues you can learn quite a bit should you have something happen.

You made a great choice. Post up some pics.

I think people that hate the Jeep are expecting more of the Normal SUV, and or truck... it's a Jeep, you can take the top off the doors off... etc....... it's not got a lot of pep but enough, and take it off road and who needs that... it has extremely good off roading capabilities,, they are noisy... not as bad as they use to be and take any convertible and tell me there isn't some kind of extra wind noise.... besides its basically a box...

I think the only mistake you made is not (I assume) making a Jeep account to pay for all those mods... you might not have to many planned but I will guess you will make a few... and a few can led into a few more...
the avalanche effect starts fast or can...

don't forget to wave....
the Jeep wave...

Agreed. Most don't have any problems. I have had none. I heard all the "crap" about jeeps as well through the years, and still was my dream car. Finally got one last year. And, exceeded all my expectations.

You have an excellent Jeep there. Now, take good care of it and it will love you back. Neglect it and you will have trouble. If something is wrong, post here and you will get the best Jeep advice I have seen anywhere. I am sure you will need to fix a few things as you go and will want to mod a few others but there is nothing wrong with a 2011 Sahara with low miles. Welcome. Jeep, it's not just a ride, it is a life experience!

Pics? Pics or it didn't happen.

The reviews you are referring to are individuals or publications that are used to comparing classes of vehicles in this case SUVs. There are no comparable vehicles to the Jeep for sale in the US so it gets force fit in the general SUV category with the likes of Muranos, Pathfinders, Explorers, etc. Most SUVs rarely see any other dirt other than what accumulates near the storm drain so the reviews are highly biased towards road manners and comfort. Every review always says the JK is great off road BUT …..

There is a significant number of new JK owners that purchased it exactly for the same reasons as you and based on the postings this forum, the number is is growing. The JK is not a model citizen for quality control and reliability but it is no worse than most Chrysler products when driven under reasonable conditions and with moderate modifications.

In any case, the JK maintains its resale value very well and used ones are always in high demand, particularly units that haven't been pushed hard off road so if you don't like it after a year you can sell it or trade it with relatively minimum losses.

For now just drive and enjoy because it really is a fun vehicle to drive anywhere;even to the mall.

A Wrangler was my dream vehicle, I have wanted one since I was 14 (I'm 44), I finally got one and love more than I even expected to. I think the slogan "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" is a very true statement. There are Jeep people and then there are others.

I have had some odd issues with my 2013 Jeep, people around me ask why I don't get rid of it or if I am sad I bought it, to which I always say "I LOVE MY JEEP". In my opinion Jeep people tolerate things other people do not. I know people who don't understand why I would pay so much for a vehicle that doesn't have some of the finer qualities other vehicles in this price range have. They don't get it and this is fine, they don't need to. This Jeep is for me, (and my family when I let them. HA!) no one else. We take it off road in the snow and in the sun, I talk so much about my Jeep that we joke "not everyone knows I am married BUT EVERYONE KNOWS I OWN A JEEP".
You didn't make a mistake, you bought a great vehicle that will get you through the years if you love it, and if it is not what you thought it would be, you will be able to sell it and move on, not many things in life are permanent. I am thrilled for you, I can't wait to read all about your thoughts in the coming months! You are going to have the time of your life!!!

Couldn't agree with you more. I've had Cadillacs, a Mercedes Kompressor and by far the car that I always wanted to get back into was a Jeep. I had an 85 growing up and when I had the chance I pulled the trigger and got a 2011 JKU Sport and couldn't be happier!

I am on jeep #5 and not because they suck or because they have a lot of issues but instead because I obviously can't get through my thick head that I'm a Jeep guy. I agree that some of the complaints are probably from people who expect too much from a Jeep, they love the look but want it to drive, handle, and sound like a normal SUV. Well it's a Jeep thing and not everyone understands.

I have had 0 mechanical issues with any of my Jeeps and I've owned

02 Sport
06 Rubicon
08 JKU
11 Mohave addition
And now a 14 Sport. With a lot of car mistakes in between. Every time I make a mistake I end up back in a Jeep.

So no in my opinion you did not make a mistake. Embrace it for what it is.....A JEEP. Welcome to the forum.

My jeep has been very reliable. I have about 27k on it over the last 18 months or so and no problems. I can tell you there is a significant difference between the new pentastar and the previous 3.8 in terms of performance. I don't feel like my JKU lags at all in normal driving.

I can also tell you that I have never had as much fun with any other vehicle I have ever owned. Right now I can't ever see myself owning another type of vehicle.

Any vehicle can be a piece of junk. My wife's Subaru is the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned, yet subies get such high reviews from consumer reports and others. Oh well. I'm on my second Jeep and I love it. If you're a Jeep person, it will get in your blood. Sometimes all I can think about is driving her and I often look for excuses to just drive. Boring errands suddenly turn into opportunities. There's no category for that in CR! How many other vehicles can you say that about? I actually feel sorry for people who drive other vehicles. Congratulations on your purchase, that's a great color. Now get out and enjoy her.

I've owned several Subies before. They are fantastic cars. Reliable, great on snowy/slushy roads... Would recommend them highly for their sure-footedness and quality. That said, they don't have a soul like a Jeep. Not even close...

Not to hijack the thread, but my wife's Subie has spent more time in the repair shop than any other vehicle I've owned. My sister-in-law's blew a head gasket at 60k miles , known issue Subaru chose to ignore. I will never buy another one. Sorry OP, now back to your regular scheduled programming.

Nice! Welcome! We are glad you are here. Great color, my wife wants one like that.

You did well, your Jeep will last for many years! My first was a used 08, I drove for 25,000 miles, no problems. I went off road a lot and climbed some 14teeners in Colorado! No Problems. Now I have a 14 I got in Aug. 8000 miles today. No problems! Enjoy - drive it naked (Not YOU! The Jeep)...that means roof and doors off :-). Then you'll know why we love Jeeps so much. It will do what you want!

Beautiful Jeep!

I am on my 4th Wrangler. Like 11JK, it is not because of any problems. I just always seem to come back to the Wrangler. There is simply no other vehicle that offers what it does. We've had a banner year for snowfall this winter in NY (as many other states have), and the Wrangler has performed flawlessly. When you think about it, Jeep really is the perfect all-season vehicle.

You made a great choice--go out and enjoy it!

I am a new Jeep owner as well.....My Dad had an old CJ and ended up hating it but i have always wanted one and finally got it. I bought an 07 JK with 30,00 and I have put almost 2,000 since December.....I tell everyone who complains it doesnt ride like a caddy and it is loud but the fraternity of Jeep owners, this forum, the JEEP wave and many folks coming up commenting makes it worth it. My son and I had the top down and doors off the first week and even in 40 degree weather we made a memory I wont forget....those things are why I dont think you or I made a mistake
