First JKUR Purchase: New or Used?

Hi guys! I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking for quite awhile and learning a lot! I'm simply looking for some input and opinions regarding my potential Jeep purchase. I've been looking to purchase a JKUR for quite a while and I have not been able to pull the trigger mainly due to the colour issue. I've always wanted a Rescue Green Jeep Rubicon. Throughout 2013 I tossed around the idea of a Commando Green, trying to justify it as a suitable colour replacement. Now having missed the 2013 production deadline to make my custom dream JKUR, I'm feeling unsatisfied. Now onto my problem: I've found a used 2008 Rescue Green JKUR for 20,500$. I'm wondering if it would be best for me to buy a lower priced used JKUR in my dream colour or to wait until a potential Green colour for 2015? I've not been able to find a Commando Green JKUR in my area with all the options I'm looking for. In order to justify a brand new Jeep I want to built it will the specific options I have in mind.

... In short, what would you do? Buy a used JKUR in your dream colour or wait to get what you want at full price?

Any help and opinions are appreciated!

I'd wait until you can find a new one. Maybe settle on a different color?

Plus, I wouldn't buy anything before 2012 because of the new engine. If the lesser horsepower of a pre 2012 wouldn't bother you, at least get one with as few miles as possible.

^I agree. To me at least, the "better" engine is worth more than a specific color, since they did have several sweet colors to choose from. But very understandable if you've got your heart set on that color. And buying new might give you better financing options to help offset the difference in cost since the used ones still hold their value so well.

When you say your area, how far away did you look? If you can find a salesman who's worth a damn, go talk him into tracking down exactly what you want. I had my guy do a trade over 500 miles away to get mine with the exact options I want, and we did the same thing for our Compass which was almost 300 miles away. If it's out there, the distance is usually less of an issue than people think it is. Only thing is, if they know you're that set on a specific one then you'll have less leverage to haggle. But it sounds like that might be worth it to you.

4:10 gear ratio in a Rubicon is not all bad paired with the 3.8.

Don't know too much details about the used 08 your looking at miles ect but at that price vs new is a lot if spare money in payments and mods you can do. I'm guessing at least 10k. I normally don't like buying brand new vehicles but wrangler is one of the few exceptions because of how well they hold values but there are some great buys used also. It's a difference between the 3.6 and the older 3.8 but my choice I would rather have the color I wanted first and engine 2nd but many would go other way. If it were me and I found what I already wanted used that's the way I would go.

I think we can all agree that 34,000 USD is a SMOKING deal on a new Rubicon. So, if this one will cost him 20,000 he can immediately take the 14,000 difference and replace the engine if he wants to.

The sense I am getting here is that the colour is REALLY important to our guy here. Jeep doesn't like to do repeats on colors...similar colors yes, but not too many repeats. So, to the OP - if you simply MUST have Rescue Green, you probably need to pull the trigger on the best deal you can get on that 2008. Do you risk someone else buying that 2008 on the chance that maybe Jeep releases a color that you think is OK? Does that color even exist? I wouldn't gamble on Jeep bringing back Rescue Green.

Also, ScoobyNC purchased a 2008 a few months back if I remember what he told me correctly. Honestly, I couldn't even tell until I got up close and asked him about it. It looks fantastic. If you take of your Jeep, it's going to run and perform well for you. If the motor bothers you, you have so many options to upgrade with the money you save off new.

Thanks guys!

I'm in North West Ontario, so the pickings are slim when it comes to local Jeep retailers. The 3.6V engine was one of the main things that was keeping me from pulling the trigger on the 2008. Also, made me uneasy that you never really know how someone takes care of their car when buying used. Since this will be my first new vehicle purchase (I'm currently driving a hand me down car), I think it might be worth it to wait for a brand new JKUR. That way I can take car of it the right way! Thanks for all your help!

commando green was not my first choice but the longer i have it the more i like it. keep looking for a 13 with the options you want, as others have said there is a good chance it is out there if you widen your search area. My first choice was crush but i bought too late in the year and out of the 3 in my area with the options i wanted, commando was the obvious choice, other 2 were black and rock lobster.

The engine is not as much of a factor as the transmission. A manual transmission from any year is not bad to drive. A 2007-11 auto is no fun on any wrangler with oversize tires, if you plan on getting an auto then I would definitely stick with a 12-13.

It doesn't matter to me which. But I will advocate driving a new one so you know how the feel. Not power wise, but handling and small things that will show themselves when you know what new is like.
