It's a start!
We went headlong into a large unknown mud puddle in the NJ pine barrens (extremely foolish)
Luckily the Jeep was smarter than I was about it, and pulled us through with no problems. Water came up pretty high there too.

We've already put some "pinstriping" (scratches from branches) on the sides as well.
I found that I felt WAY better after wearing a little of the new off of her.

Always fun, but watch your speed. Especially when kicking up alot of water on the passenger side. Your air box is over there; water likes to deflect off the underside of the hood and into the air box. People have hydrolocked in water WAY lower than the box due to the spray effect.

Here's a JKU hydrolocking in ~10" of water...

JK's have hydrolocked on-road, going through street puddles. Check your air box frequently for dirt/mud build-up clogging the drain holes. The JK air box can handle a bit of water flow, but if the drain holes are clogged, the water will just build up and eventually get into the engine, and that "eventually" can happen even while driving on-road through street puddles.

In that video, that JK was already covered in mud before going through this puddle, so I'm guessing the air box drain holes had already gotten clogged with mud, and the air box already had water collected in it. It just took this last splash to put it over the top and send water draining into the engine.

Good advice.

Few weeks ago a road near my house was flooded. It was dark and I was half asleep, I drove through it fast no problems but I did check my air box--it was completely dry. Lucky me

Hopefully get some more photos/vids later, but here is a few of my playing in the woods in eastern CT today. Alot of big puddles, but adding some mud guards kept the jeep fairly clean. A fun day; after my first real bit of offroading, I'm off to get some limb risers and a tub of wax.





Obligatory flex pics. Lots of long grass so not a good shot but oh well.

I'm new to the jeep scene, I was with a guy one night we he locked up the engine in his Cherokee going through some deep water. So I know the expense all that runs into and want nothing to do with it. But check these videos out.

Is faster better than slower because you are pushing the water away from the jeep?

Why do some lock up in 10 inches and others will go through this. Are they making changes to the air box or something?

You can hear at the end of the video, the engine is cranking over.....believe me when I say.... if you hydrolock an engine.. it WILL NOT turn over....seen it done a few times....

I think this one was a simple case of electronics flooding....

You lock up in 10 inches because of speed. Water aimed at the exact wrong angle as the jeep processes through the water gets sprayed into the intake and then hydro. Water crossings should be slow and deliberate. Anything else is asking for trouble.

Much smarter to move at a steady pace rather than pumping too much gas. Here is my jeep going through deep water without snorkel, no problems once or ever and i've done it many times. Although, snorkel on it's way!

My wifes family is from Voluntown/Griswald, (think I spelled those wrong). Brother in law took us on a few of the local trails. So don't worry, I can't give up the trails because I honestly have no idea where I was, something about "well over there is rhode island, you can tell because all the trail gates are locked because rhode island sucks! and over there is CT, you can tell because the trails are open!"

it does seem like there would be some nice club rides down there, the 2 trails we were on had alot of good pull off areas, and seemed pretty well maintained. alot of low trees and a few areas needed clearing, but otherwise well kept. there must be a club out there

so the day after, it seems my suspension is squeaking, sounds like rusty springs. is this normal? I didnt really get a chance to hose off under the jeep after, because it was supposed to rain (it still hasnt). Hopefully itll rain tonight, but any thoughts?

I meant on the noise! I'm still a rookie to this jeep crap, im used to owning 10+year old pieces of crap, so having new front coils making noise with less then 500 on them makes me nervous. I just can't imagine it's something bad unless the coils are bad and somehow already cracked and rusted, but then again I don't know why they'd be making so much noise either.

Sorry to hear this... this isn't the one making noise is it?

Could it be dirt in there?

If you think the squeaking is from dirt that got in, try using one of those circular sprinklers that uses a stream of water broken periodically by an oscillating weight that causes the sprinkler to move in a circle. Slide it under the jeep. Move the jeep after about 15 minutes. Do the front and back. It'll clean all the dirt off of the frame and suspension.

I need a house with a garage to support my jeep habit I went to a DIY carwash place with a powerwasher and 3 bucks later, the squeak is gone! Musta just been dirt in the housing. Hopefully when the jeep dries off the squeak wont be back
