First off-road trip.

It was supposed to be a shopping trip to find some new clothes for my son. After we were done, I couldn't help but notice how close we were to a favorite local trail/sandy spot and the fact that my wife was not with us.

As soon as I left the pavement, I saw two jacked up 4x2 pickups with monster mudder tires buried in the sand not 30 feet ahead. I stopped my bone stock Wrangler, put it in 4 low, and rolled past them with a big smile on my face. After enjoying skittering across the top of the sand for a while, we rolled back out to find that one truck had gotten out and the other now sitting on the axle. I asked if they had a tow strap (they did) and proceeded to pull a quad cab F250 out all by my lonesome while my boy (12) did an awesome job spotting for me. Even after getting the guy back on all fours in a few inches of sand, his one wheel would just spin. I ended up hauling him out all the way to the pavement. Afterwards, I gave the owner my best Dad scolding the kids look that said "keep the poser trucks on the asphalt" and drove into the sunset.

For the life of me, I don't understand putting all the lift kits and off-road gear on a 4x2. Why not skip the extra gear and just buy a 4x4?
