First Oil Change Question

I'm almost to 6,000 miles and was thinking of doing my first oil change and tire rotation. I typically go to a local tire shop for routine maintenance vs the dealer based on their costs being much higher.

Is there anything in particular that needs to be done outside of the oil/filter change that a local shop couldn't or shouldn't do that would justify taking it to the dealer?

This is according to the owners manual.

8,000 Miles (13,000 km) or 6 Months Maintenance Service Schedule

Change the engine oil and engine oil filter.
Rotate the tires, rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before 8,000 miles (13 000 km).
Inspect all door latches for presence of grease, reapply if necessary.

I'll be at six months soon so the timing seems right. That's all I could find also in the manual, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Is there anything in our warranty that states service must be performed by an authorized dealer?

I wince. You didn't ask so I am hesitant to pose it as an option.

Our Wrangler is about the easiest oil change there is. IF you want to tackle it, I or any one of several on here would talk you through it not to mention there is a reading library Full of threads on here about oil changes probably youtube as well.

I have changed ball joints, installed a snorkel, and done countless other pretty in depth projects on my Jeep and I let the dealership handle the oil changes. The reason being that I am terrified of cracking the housing by over torqueing the filter. I figure if they are the only one's who have ever touched the filter, there can be no argument who's at fault if oil starts pooling under it after an oil change. Plus, it's not THAT much cheaper to do it yourself and I don't have to deal with the waste oil (I live within 6 blocks of a large river, I don't want it to find it's way into there).

OP it's sounds like you're headed to one of those speedy lube kinda places. Nothing wrong with that. To each his own. Just make darn sure that when they top off your fluids as a courtesy; don't let them touch your coolant. I guaranty they will add "universal" in with your OAT fluid and that's not good at all. Plenty of threads here on that subject. There's a warning in the manual as well. Read up on it now and you will avoid an expensive mess down the road.

And don't let them tell you "it's universal and works with all coolants". That just isn't true. 2013+ gets OAT fluid only.

Other than keeping the miles as low as possible on it, I personally don't believe there's any advantage to NOT going to the dealer to take care of things with your JK. For one, they keep a record of your vehicle.

I don't have my JK/JKU yet, but there's another car in the family, a honda,
and we've decided to take it to the dealer, for all service.
They've mailed and called us on numerous occasions to buy the car back and/or offer us incentives on trade-ins. Now, I don't care for honda as a personal vehicle, but it happens to run smoother and more quietly than any other car I've seen lately. And, it's a 4 cylinder. I've even snuck up behind people walking down our street, only to startle them (unintentionally), as I /we mosied on by.

They've come up to us afterwards, and asked us "Is that a hybrid", etc. The answer is no, it's just a regular accord. They say they didn't hear a single sound. We're like amazed to hear that.

Not sure if that's a result of taking it to the dealer to change the oil, and what not, but this car happens to NOT burn ONE DROP of oil, between oil changes. I've never seen a honda like this. Some of them burn so much oil, there's no telling how they spend most of their lives.

I do my fair share of driving "ours", and other than warm-ups, I don't baby it. It's one purchase that the little woman has yet to regret.

So, does the dealer know something about this vehicle, that we don't?
I've suspected for a while, that there's a segment of cars, in a certain V.I.N. range, that were made exceptionally well, and someone at my local dealership, wants this car back. I don't know. But it's a 2010 model.
I'd sure like to find a similar V.I.N. range of JKs/JKUs that were similarly built.

I ran mobil 1 on our Mazda CX9 since 08 and the motor is still silent at 110K miles so when it came to my 2nd oil change on the new JK I had them put in their Pennzoil synthetic. When it started previous to that change I could hear a few seconds of clatter before quieting down. I'm in Minnesota and it's winter so it was cold. Now with the synthetic I hear nothing for the few seconds I used to hear something. I'm sticking with the synthetic. I like what I don't hear.
