My TJ requires the ignition key to be placed in the on position to flat tow.

I Just upgraded to a 2012 Wrangler. The owner's manual doesn't address if the ignition key is required to be in the on position, to prevent the steering wheel from locking up while being flat towed behind my motorhome.

Is there more directions I'm missing?

No steering lock on my 13. Just ordered Roadmaster baseplate kit for 10A and will be flat towing soon without key in ignition.

I noticed today that with no key in the ignition, my steering wheel turned. ?? Question is on the 2010 Sahara, (wife's jeep) in the owners manual says to put in acc mode for flat towing and disconnect battery.. Anyone flat towed there JK with out the key in or not disconnect battery ?????? I know on my TJ it has to be in the unlock mode and no battery disconnect,...

We flat tow our 2012 JKUR, no key is required for the steering wheel to turn. There is a sequence you have to follow to disengage the transmission, that should be in the owners manual.

I was told on the JKU's older than 2012 there is a fuse to pull up (white I think) and it will keep the battery from going dead as you do have to have the key turned for the wheels to free up.

You may need to verify the second part with a dealership, I haven't ever towed a JKU older than my 2012.

Okay, did you have to disconnect your battery though, even with the key not in ??

After having a dead battery in the toad from the braking system using up all the power we installed a charge line from the motor home to the Jeep, problem solved. No need to disconnect anything.

We tow our 2013 JKU without the key in, after someone here pointed out the 2013 does not have the steering lock. You can verify this is true by turning the steering wheel, or by watching the tires when going around a corner.

In plain English.

No key needed. You do not have steering lock.
If an Auto, leave in park, transfer case in Neutral.
If a manual, leave in 6th gear, transfer case in Neutral.

I tow mine all over. No key is needed and no battery disconnect either. Jeep quit using the steering interlock about 2007, I believe. I use a ReadyBrake braking system and a separate tail/stop light bulb in the housing. The Ready Brake will activate the Jeeps stop lamps but you need something else for turn signals. I have a kit with separate bulbs in the housings for mine.

We have not disconnected the battery, or pulled any fuses. We have towed it multiple times and never had any issues with the battery.

It actually tows very easliy, we use the Falcon All Terrain tow bar and I have a Rock Hard front bumper so we purchased the brackets from them to attach it. We can be on the road in about 20 minutes
