For those looking to do a "hidden winch".

I found this while surfing the net.
507 - Winch Mount | Olympic 4X4 Products for over 60 years

I guess it will technically be semi-hidden. But, access to the winch will be greatly improved.

Does anyone have any experience with mounting this on a stock bumper? After reviewing, it looks like it is designed to go with Olympic's bumpers...

Comments?

No, that's not what I'm looking for. I meant a recessed mount using the Olympic recessed mount. Based on your pics, it looks like you used the Harbor Freight universal mount and welded it to your frame. What I would like to see is if anyone has used the Olympic recessed mount with the stock bumper.

I ordered the Olympic plate in hopes of redoing my hidden winch so I would have access to the winch from the top. I thought this would be ideal for this, even though it is designed to be used with the Olympic bumpers. What I did not notice, was the lack of a fairlead mount. Hence why it is to be used with their bumpers. That does not mean it could not be adapted though.

The harbor freight mount comes with a fairlead mount. Why not just use that one. You could mount it right side up.

In order to keep the winch recessed, you will need to cut off the cross bar/skid plate that is under the frame behind the bumper. I believe that is there to help protect the steering components. I did not want to do that, although others have.

Its not there to protect the steering components. Its a frame brace. It connects the frame rails as a support to keep you from twisting the frame. Welding or bolting in the winch mount would replace that but it wouldnt hurt to run an extra tube also for extra strength. Why are you so against mounting the winch upside down? Are you going with a powerplant? Thats the only winch I could see there being any issue in mounting upside down.

I'm not against the upside down mounting. I actually really like how the finished product turned out. I have had to use the winch a couple times, and in this case, function is more important than form. I had a couple issues getting to the winch when I needed to. So, I have been looking at options to flip the winch over to increase access to it, but keep it as hidden as possible.

Aren't you able to mount fairleads directly to some winches? In that case, you wouldn't need to have a fairlead mount on the winch plate. If yes, does anyone know which brands allow the fairlead to be mounted directly to the winch, Warn, Superwinch...?

I'm getting ready to order a winch and would love to be able to use the Olympic plate to mount it upright.

What if synthetic ropes are used? Then wouldn't you just need a thin fairlead that could be mounted on the bumper?

True and might work, but I'm not using synthetic rope.

Good point. Even with wire rope the stock steel bumper might be able to handle the stress. Too bad I cut a big hole in my bumper for my winch.

Although it does give an option to those still thinking about doing a hidden winch.

DiSH, you might want to give this some thought.

Yea, I may have to give the Olympic mount a shot. It can't be as much fabrication as the other mounts, and at least the winch will be right-side up.

cavsvet,

You ordered this plate, but I haven't seen any updates on your install or your opinion as to how well it works as a hidden winch mount. Can you give us an update with pics? Thanks!

This just went on my list to do. After seeing Jerboy's install as clean as it is, definitely worth the money. Is there any restriction to what brand winch can be used? Ive never had a winch before, but with this build Im wanting to make it about as self sustainable as I can....within reason. Also a little curious how well the stock bumper will stand up to the stress of winching NOT straight out (hope that made sense).

I returned it after I realized there was no fairlead mounting plate.

Then I realized that the stock bumper would probably handle the stress of the farilead being mounted to it.

Now I am back to thinking of ordering it again.

I would need a new stock bumper though. Mine has a big hole it the front of it. I don't think the fairlead will mount to it right now.

I'm also thinking of getting a new off road/winch mount bumper.

What to do, what to do?

I do think the Olympic mount is a real option for those Jeepers who are starting from scratch on putting a winch on the stock bumper.

I really should have researched and thought this out a little more.

I just ordered this mount, the Or-fab brake booster relocation kit and the Engo 9000 with synthetic rope winch. I'll post pics after I figure it out.
