I dont post a lot on here but thought this was a story worth sharing. I was leaving work yesterday afternoon and pulled up to a stop sign right around the corner from my office. I saw something sitting in a pile next to the stop sign and thought, that looks a lot like a Jeep soft top. Nah, couldn't be, so I left and went to have some lunch. I could not get that pile out of my head so I thought, if it still there when I come back I am gonna grab it. Worst case, its trash and I dispose of it properly. It was there when I got back so I grabbed it. I saw a back window and it looked pretty good. When I got home I took it out and took it all apart. All of the fabric looked awesome, no obvious scratches or tears. I took all the windows out of the Jeep along with all the misc parts that were sitting there. Its all in very good shape and I found the part number 56823-35. The exact top I was going to buy this spring, I never considered myself very lucky but this was my lucky day. I printed the parts list, contacted Bestop, and got a quote for the missing parts for about $150 bucks. Not a bad day, a $750 top for $150 bucks.

Missing the passenger rear door surround, a couple knobs, the rear top arch, tailgate bar mounts (tailgate bar is there). Just some misc small stuff for the most part.

The only bad part is it still going to cost me a bunch of money, between the missing parts and the hard top hoist I will need to buy this wont be a cheap freebie. Oh well, I am not complaining.

The thing that I keep trying to figure out is why someone would have left it there, it's the middle of winter in Chicago. Far from soft top weather and it's not an area where any houses are very close. Again, not complaining, just makes me wonder.

That is quite a find, been in the Windy City several times, my bet is it fell off, while being transported. If it was on the curb probably fell off a disposal truck.I use to see them stuff stacked high above there open top trailer. I just sold my soft top and bought a hard top.

If I knew where I lost it I'd tell you. I took it off to get some fresh air after the night shift and it must have fallen off while I slept on the drive home. Coul you mail it back to Nashville cause it's raining?

Thats cool, but it sure makes you wonder how it got there. I doubt if it fell off a truck or car hauler if all of the loose pieces were stacked up in a pile. My guess is that somebody stole a jeep, then tossed the top while they went joyriding. Or maybe just stole the top and then ditched it?

This is what I was thinking I thought about trying to do some research and talk to the local authorities. The reality is that even if it was stolen insurance will buy whoever a new top. I did not do anything wrong so its mine now, there is no law that says you cant pick up trash on the side of a road.
