Found out I lost my "lifetime engine/ powertrain" warranty.

I called the dealer today because I received a postcard last week saying I needed to bring my Jeep in for a "free check-up" for the warranty. Turns out, even though they only mailed the postcard last week, being I bought my Jeep on January 21, 2008, my warranty is expired because on the 5th year of ownership, you only have 60 days from the date of purchase to get this "inspection". As much as I love my Jeep, the problems and b.s. I have been dealing with from Chrysler since day 1 unfortunately convinced me this will be my last Chrysler product.

You had to know there were going to be some really onerous conditions on a lifetime powertrain warranty.

My 5th year anniversary is coming up in August. I'm going to read that part of the manual very carefully. Thanks for the reminder!!!

If your electricity bill doesn't show up in your mail for 2 months, does that mean you don't have to pay it? The owner is required to maintain their vehicle & bring it in for inspection when needed. You have to bear some of the responsibility for this. Have you tried to call Star asistance to try & get it reinstated?

I'm beginning to do a lot of work on my own jeeps. I have to replace an axle seal on my wife's jeep. Her's had the lifetime warranty to the original owner but we are the second owners. I'm not sweating that too badly on hers and don't worry about it. If something major goes wrong I expect to be able to handle it. One thing I am finding out about jeeps is that there are enough of them out there that finding replacement parts gets easier and easier as it gets older and older. Got a used AX5 transmission for my 92 for $150.00 and it has been purring along ever since. I'm learning not to get too anxious. The advice of the previous poster about trying to get it reinstated is good advice. Trying won't hurt but remember that the jeep is one of the most rugged vehicles on the market IMHO.

Wait, so your telling us that its Chrysler's fault that you did not follow the rules for the lifetime warranty? How is it their fault? Do things yourself, dont wait for people to tell you what to do.

Also, did you create a username just to tell us that your mad? You got 5 years of warranty and messed up the lifetime part because you were not paying attention. Sounds to me like you are trolling.

Yeah, I realize it's partially my fault. I did try to call and get it reinstated, but the person I spoke to said there was no way. I was never told about the mandatory inspection but I am not pointing fingers. Just pisses me off because in 08 I had tons of electrical problems and went to file the lemon law but was asked by Chrysler for one more chance to fix it and I gave them the opportunity. For the most part it was fixed, but I still have an issue with my Jeep not starting sometimes (like there's no battery in it). I've already paid over $2,500.00 for them to try to figure this issue out with no luck so a lifetime engine warranty would have been nice. Unfortunately, this is the icing on the cake that left such a sour taste in my mouth for Chrysler. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy my Jeep though!!!

COLOUJK,

I'm looking for the part of your post that is helpful to the OP. I think he knows that he made an omission and he may even be cranky about it. That is one of the uses of a forum like this is to air concerns and find a direction. He helped me by reminding me to check out the fine print in my warranty. Someone has helped him out about where to call and see if he can get it reinstated. Lets try to be helpful as that is the nature of this forum.

Not trolling, actually joined because I want to learn how to work on my Jeep myself and this site comes up constantly when I type questions into google so I figured why not join. It was honestly 100% a coincidence that I happened to find this info out from Jeep today about an hour after I joined this site. I was looking up a fix for something and this site came up, I joined and remembered about the post card so I called Jeep to make the appointment. I shouldn't really have to explain to you, but being I did just join and immediately came off b!tching, I feel you all deserve an explanation so you don't think I'm trolling. Sorry that it came across that way.

I had this inspection on my calendar since the day I purchased the vehicle. I tried to get it inspected 2 weeks prior to the inspection period and they told me I had to bring it back.

I think they’ve regretted the decision since the day it was offered and will do anything they can to get out of it, including sending out the reminder late (which they probably didn’t want to send out either).

Try writing Chrysler a letter stating what happened if it is still close to the date of expiration. See what they say. In court they might consider it arbitrary that this thing has such a tight date clause to be able to get them out of the warranty. If you were ever involved in a drivetrain issue you could produce copies of your correspondence with them as evidence that you tried to reason with them about this issue. Judges don't always see these issues as black and white. All I am saying is that you should at least make the effort and save copies of what happens. Put it in your jeep file just in case you may need it for a future problem.

I'd keep calling...different person may yield different answer. I'd call everyday until they say yes just to shut you up! Worst they can say is no...

Ah, yea that might be why you got some of the answers you did (including mine). I would try what they said above. Keep calling a couple of different places and see who bites.

You are correct about them regretting this offer. I did a search on the warranty and found out Chrysler would actually give you more for your trade if you have this warranty because they can put you in a new vehicle for a loss, but resell your vehicle without the lifetime warranty and it will save them money.

as F'ed up as that sounds it makes sense.... the BIG books are a lot different then our little books...

i juts bought a JK Sahara..and i got the top shell unlimited warranty...mostly cuz i drive about 25,000 miles a year....
so do i have to get the inspection done before the end of standard warranty date ? or mileage?
Thats a big difference with me...i'll have probably 100,000-125,000 miles by the end of my payments in 60 months....

Too bad, next time pay more attention. We live in a society now where nobody wants to be responsible for their own mistakes, must be able to blame someone else or complain enough to make them reinstate it.
Wonder why the goverment keeps passing more and more laws to protect us from ourselves?

Heck, nobody pointed this out or mentioned it during the process I went through buying the warranty. Good thing I saw this post.

F this! So you didn't remember to have a 5 year service until 2.5 months too late. Look at the post mark date on the reminder card and call Chrysler with your dilemma. I'd call instead of writing. If you get the right person they should help you right away. Honestly, if it we're me I'd have my wife call. She's great at making perfect small talk and connecting with people. I may be a bit abrasive sometimes. It'll be important to make customer service like you and want to help your situation.

Actually there was no mention of a 5 year inspection when I bought my Jeep either. I will email the salesman to see what's up. Glad I saw this.

so i guess the "5 years" coincides with the 5yr/100,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty that comes as part of the standard warranty....

So in my case (i drive 20,000-25,000 miles a year) i should be more conscience of the mileage rather then the years...?

Just received a reply email from Chrysler:

Thank you for contacting the Jeep Customer Assistance Center.

After thoroughly reviewing your request and the files on this matter, we
respectfully concur with the decision rendered by our Customer Service
Representative.

We fully appreciate your concern, particularly in view of the expense
and inconvenience involved, however, we are unable to accommodate your
request for out-of-warranty consideration. The vehicle has exceeded the
time and/or mileage limitations of the warranty (or warranties) we
offered on the vehicle at the time it was purchased. Although we are
unable to provide a more favorable reply, we appreciate the opportunity
to review your request.

Thank you again for taking the time to communicate with us. We're sorry
we cannot provide a more favorable reply.

Thanks again for your email.

Sincerely,

Melissa

Customer Service Representative
Jeep Customer Assistance Center

I guess they saw how many times it was in the shop with issues. One thing for sure, i will never own another Chrysler product. I was never told of this "5 year check-up" until it was already too late and although i blame myself, even while i was under warranty, the service i received was horrible. Sorry for ranting, but its frustrating. Please get the word out to everyone with the infinity warranty that they only have 60 days from 5 years after the original purchase date to get this check-up. I don't want Chrysler to take advantage of any Jeep owner and this is the 5 year mark for most people with this warranty. I wasn't told by my dealer about the checkup and I'm sure many others weren't either.

On a positive note though, i can mod the crap out of my Jeep now. I was told by my dealer if i did any mods like a lift, larger tires, etc., it would void the warranty because it puts more stress on the engine and powertrain.

Is this warranty refundable? I just put 35s and a lift on.

It didn't cost the owner anything in the first place. It was a promotion by Chrysler in the 2007-08 model years and all but a few vehicles purchased new during those had the warranty included.

I have the lifetime powertrain warranty on my 2007 Sebring. I've been well aware of the 5-yr free inspection, keeping maintenance records/receipts, etc., that I know they will ask for each time that 5 year anniversary comes around. I did get a reminder card in the mail several weeks before the 5 year date was up but I remembered it anyway.

If I'm reading this right, he's talking about the lifetime powertrain warranty that came with all Chrysler products of that period. You have 60 days prior to 60 days past the five year anniversary to have an inspection. It's not the purchased warranty and its not transferable, original owner only, you can't even give the car to your kids. When I bought I was told about the inspection and how important it was to get the inspection to maintain the warranty also when I took delivery of my new jeep the service manager reminded me of the inspection due a year ahead on the other one
I doubt there's any recourse since there was a four month window to have the inspection. Chrysler replaced it with the 5/100,000 in 09 which requires no inspection.
The hard part will be remembering the ten year inspection.

Did your salesman tell you about it? The more research i do, the more i find out about people that lost it because they were never informed about it. Oh-well, life goes on. Gives me more of an opportunity to learn how to work on my Jeep. Unfortunately it sucks for my dealer because i`ll be damned if i ever bring my Jeep there for service or problems again.

Yes, that was a big selling point at the time. I remember I did have a hard time trying to get any detailed paperwork about the lifetime warranty but I persisted and they mailed some stuff to me.

For the first 5 years I hadn't been very meticulous about keeping records of oil purchases and things. Fortunately, since I have free lifetime oil changes (minimum every 6,000 miles) it is in the dealer's computer that shows I brought it in for its regular oil change. I did keep receipts when I did the coolant flush, transaxle fluid change and other things.

I now keep a special folder of anything I've done or bought for the car since it last passed its 5-yr inspection last September. If I still have it at 10 years I will show them the folder if they ask.

I remembered when they came up with this. My service manager and I even talked about it in a hush hush kinda way. He knows I maintain my vehicles and he knows I work on them, and even he said it was a warranty he would expect only a few die hard OEM loving, dealer maintaining, people would really love. He said for most people, it will be good for 3-4 years at most and they will trade it in anyhow.
