Freedom (Oscar Mike) or Sahara?

I'm shopping for my first Jeep and am trying to decide between the Freedom (Oscar Mike) edition or the Sahara. The price difference between them, brand new, at the dealership that I'm leaning towards is about $50.00!! ($32,968 vs. $33,012)

I've found some reviews that lean towards the Oscar Mike, but they all refer to a huge price difference (~$3000). If I can get them for basically the same price, should I lean towards the Sahara?

The main difference to me is the seat material and trim. The Oscar Mike seems like better quality, is that true?

They have the same stereo head unit (130), but the Sahara has the Alpine Premium speakers. I've heard the factory subwoofer isn't worth a crap, and that's really the only option pushing me towards the Sahara stereo.

I'm looking forward to joining the club!

If you're looking at the same ballpark price point, I would go with the Freedom. Obviously, it's all user preference. What I've narrowed it down to, is
  • Sahara will have the 115v plug in and nicer rims
  • The Freedom will have better seats and the Black Appearance Group (Rubi rails though, not tubular side-steps), and the floor mats (which imo are flimsy compared to Quadratecs, BesTops, Tread Lightly, etc)
Obviously, if you have a higher price point, the Sahara will be better if you want leather and a Nav, etc, etc.

For me I was torn between the Freedom Edition or the Sahara. Choose the Sahara as I wanted all leather not a mix of Leather and cloth on the Freedom Edition, 430 nav and alpine speakers in Sahara as well and I love the new 2013 Sahara wheels and tires.

Very nice! My wife has a Sahara with leather and 430n. It's awesome.

I have the Commando Green Freedom Edition. My wife was more partial to the white Sahara but it was considerably more. If the price was about the same I would have gotten the Sahara but I am completely happy with mine and you don't see them as often as the Sahara where I live.

Ah yes. Did you get the heated seats? I forgot about that option for the plug in with the OM.

I looked at both when I ordered...I went with the Sahara.
(I looked at a Sport S, Moab, Freedom Edition, and Sahara)

I went with the Sahara, but I do like how they've upgraded the Freedom Edition for 2013, it nearly bridges the gap between a Sport S and a Sahara.

A 2013 Freedom Edition with heated seats (and 115V outlet) and the Alpine system is well equipped.

While I loved the overall look of the OM edition, I personally didn't like the seats. The mixture of leather (is it really leather???) and cloth was the deal breaker for me.

With the Freedom panels off (my typical running style) the sun warms the entire cab area pretty well and the location of the leather inserts on the seats is exactly where the only exposed parts of my body (while wearing gym clothes) would make contact.

I loathe the smell of searing flesh in the afternoon...

I'm betting your Sahara has a few more options (better stereo, color match hardtop, leather, etc.). Could also be based on location I suppose. I'm in Dallas.

I've looked at a few that are closer to that $36k mark, but they have the navigation and matching top.

I'm trying to negotiate trading out the black hardtop for a colored one at purchase regardless of which one I choose. That dealership doesn't currently have any on the lot with a white hardtop.

Strange. I honestly don't notice a difference between my wife's saddle brown leather and the OM leather (in temp). I didn't find it to be hot, and this was on a HOT day this past weekend.

Anytime you ask for people's opinion on looks your gonna get a variance. It's just gunna depend on what you like and what you can live without it want to add on to the jeep later. Me, I chose the OM It was a much bigger price difference (31,000 before taxes) and I liked the upgrades and the interior. Yeah there are things on the Sahara I liked, but non of it was worth me spending the extra money.

Yeah. I like how it's different than the rest too with the seat half/half and the star put into it. I also love the stitching on the arm wrest between the two front seats. It's little things like that that make me like the OM as much as I do.

Some posters may not be familar with the 2013 OM's. When they were first introduced in 2012, it the seated portion was half cloth and half vinyl, Rubi rails were not available, nor were heated seats (and the 115V outlet). The 2013 versions added those features, so that really closed the gap with the Sahara. There were also very limited colors for 2012.

I chose a 2013 OM primarily because I liked the simple amenities that were included with the package and the fact that they are far less common here in prime mall crawler territory. Found one on a nearby dealer's lot and lucked into an additional rarity in the fact that it came with a color matched hard-top. And I will join the chorus for getting the rubi rails. I was initially focused on finding one with the side steps, but am quite happy I ended up with the rails. I picked up a cheap take-off set of the steps to make it easier for my daughter and wife to get in and out, but have the rails ready to slap back on for off road adventures.

Thanks everyone for all the input!!

Ended up getting a heck of a deal on a new Sahara ($31,900), Billet Silver with color match hard top. At least I think it was a good deal, right?

Now I just have to decide what to modify FIRST!!
