Freedom top question

I was wondering if the 08 is less prone to the leaking that the 07 had, mine has a jan 08 build date and i was wondering if this problem has been pretty much resolved since they issued a t.s.b. notice on it last year. . any feedback would be great....thanks

Been back FOUR times for the leaking. Had two seperate gasket replacements, (per Chrysler's Revision changes), and it STILL leaked.

I told my dealer they can have it, requested a second Soft Top, and they can make a PLANTER out of the "Freedom Top," for all I care.

The Dealership did so, and I'm free of the "Freedom Top" thank you very much!!

Pete: Have an 07 unlimited and it does not leak. Bought it in June of 07 and it has been through torrential downpours and tons of snow siiting on the freedom top without a drop of moisture on the inside.

Im a tech at a Jeep dealer and they dont all leak and any tech who is willing to think just a lil bit out of Chryslers box can fix the leak.....FWIW the four doors are the ones that have the problem more often....I would guess outta the many hardtops we have sold maybe 15 percent have had a complaint....prob another 15 percent are like me and figure its a wrangler and a lil leak is part of the charm.....the rest I have to assume havent had a problem......

expecting wranglers both hard and soft top to be completly watertight IMO shows that we are drastically moving away from the core customer to a more yuppyfied customer.......but they have the money I suppose......perhaps if they complain enough about this kind of lil niggling stuff Chrysler will just give up and fully enclose evey wrangler and ruin it for the rest of us who cant really see what is wrong with a lil drip here and there.......which is IMO well worth it for the rest of the package........but I have a full soft top and half doors ......and yes there are leaks in a heavy rain........ DUH...NO SHIT.....never woulda thought to complain bout it tho.... I expected it.....There are plugs in the floor and the front carpet comes out in about 5 minutes....Gary

If the question posed about what year the Wrangler is, was to me, I bought the 08 "X" two-dr..

The leaking is NOT during the rainstorm as such. It is not coming into the vehicle from the downpour, but rather the water lays on the gaskets, and when the vehicle is in operation, the t-tops (which are designed to flex with the flexing of the vehicle), allow water to enter the passenger compartment via the gaskets during the flexing (or "movement") of the sectionals.

The vehicle is WONDERFUL, and I am completely satisfied that I am rid of the hard top, no matter how "fixed" they believe the problem to be.

My 05 TJ soft top and my 07 JK freedom top - NO leaks. Not in downpours and not when water & snow sat on both tops. If Chrysler can build these 2 vehicles leak free, they "should" be able to build them all leak free.

I just ordered my jeep today - 2 door Freedom Top. My dealer told me that the ones that they've seen leak are the 4doors - not the 2 doors.

Makes sense cause the 4 door would flex more. I'm gonna try it and see.

My 4dr hasn't leaked yet that I've noticed. At least not anymore than I'd expect a jeep top to leak

Freedom tops leak

Took my 4 door 2008 back to dealer 4 times and they couldn't stop it from leaking above the rearview mirror. After registering the Jeep as a lemon under the Mass lemon law, they agreed to replace the Freedom top with a soft top and to refund the money I paid for the option.

There's a big difference between a "lil drip" and the carpets being soaked every time it rains. I noticed a few little drips over the last few weeks and shrugged it off. When I got into the car yesterday and the carpets were sopping wet, that's when I decided to have it checked out. At some point a leak that bad is going to start to smell. I'm having the seals re-done next week, hopefully that takes care of the problem.

I've only had my Wrangler for a few months, but recently here in the Northeast we've had tons of rain and I have not had any problems with leaking.

No problems here. An occassional little drop here and there but so what. Nothing major.

Big thing is to take the lids off and on EXACTLY the way the manual says to. Slap them back on in a rush and it is no good. The screw things need to go in careful and be tightened down carefully too.

I haven't gotten around to switching tops yet. It's now 90 and I am ready to be topless. We've had some nasty flippen storms so I guess my delay is good but tommorrow I am switching. When I switch, I clean well where the top sits and I gently clean up the rubber seals. Alittle defense in depth.

'08 2-door and it only leaks when the gaskets are filthy. I wipe them down with silicone goo and it's all better after.
14 months old and 34,500 miles. knock wood...

I have a question regarding the freedom top. I'm shopping for a Wrangler for the first time since getting rid of my '89. If I buy a used Wrangler can the freedom top be fitted on an older model?

Thanks

Sure.
They changed the design to fit a little snugger in '09; just make sure they know what year you've got.

Love the honesty and candor of this post....

Yeah, mine seems to leak a little, maybe it is because I always have the top off....... nice commentary on the YUPPIE-FICATION of the JK, especially the Unlimiteds....... blah, blah --- too hot, too windy, too loud, too wet....

go get a #%@!#$@# Escalade and be done with your whining....

Can't wait for rain this winter

Reading this thread, it should be interesting when the rains start here this winter.

I never had a leak in my YJ (95) until about the 10yr mark at which time both the seams on the Soft top and the lower windshield hinge seal started leaking. Replaced both and have not had a problem since.

Just bought a JK unlimited with the Freedom top and as I was going over the vehicle with the salesman at delivery he said "the top will leak a little, It's just the way they are"

From what I've read if you put the top on a specific way (putting the panels on then reseating the driver side making sure you pick it straight up and putting it straight down so as not to kink or bind the gasket) it should stay relatively leak free.
