Front Mounted Receiver Hitch

I had never considered this until I saw it mentioned in another thread today.

I love the idea and the versatility a setup like that could provide. How much capacity do you think you'd lose on a winch mounted this way? I'm assuming you'd have to lose some capacity since all of the force would be pretty much on the hitch pin, right?

If you use a bolt/weld in frame front hitch--it'll take as much as the rear hitch, but

When you use the bumper/hitch, like mine--it's a light OLYMPIC bumper and is used for light boat/trailer MOVING around and very light recovery pulling/w smaller winch--

You should never hook up a stranded vehicle, to your front end and try towing in reverse--bad news-

Any full recovery should only be done with FRAME mounted hitchs/winchs--

This one is a 2500lb ATV winch, but works for light crap and only weighs 25lbs with hitch-plate, pretty easy to move around-

The Oly bumper is a 530 series, but I forget the rest of the number--check quadratec/4wdparts/vender on board-

Good luck

JIMBO

seen a couple of em... one upside is that you can unhitch the winch and relocate it to the back, where probably 90% of the time it would be of more use (you don't normally back up into a tight spot...). another is that you can unhitch it and leave it in the garage between wheeling trips to lighten the load and prevent theft (the two or three I've seen with hitch mounts here in el paso said it was for anti theft. stealing winches used to be a local hobby about 10 years ago, saw LOTS of em disappear).

downside is that you aren't bolted straight to the frame anymore (have to winch a little more carefully, no snatch blocks) and you have to do some creative cabling to get that much power back there. seen one guy that used jumper cables to power a 9K that was rear hitched and the jumper cables got a little toasty after a few minutes...
