Front Skid on JK Rubicon

Wondered what fellow JK Rubicon owners think about the need to replace the stock front skid that covers the electronic sway bar disconnect. Is there a real danger to damaging this unit or is it high enough to be out of harms way. I have a new Rubicon ordered and I'm trying to decide what accessories will have priority.

Yes. That plastic thing is not a skid. My front skid was $90. For such a small cost it was one of my first mods.

Good choice ordering the Rubi!

I agree, that plastic POS was the first thing to go. I would have replaced it even if I didn't have a Rubi.

I just ordered the RR front slid plate for mine this weekend to replace the "-1 air dam of limited utility".

My first mods on my JK: took off the stock plastic air dam, and put on a swaybar disconnect skid plate. I would do that again first if I got a new JK. Second project, equal priority: relocate the evaporative canister.

There's nothing "Pathetic" about that airdam, it was supplied for several REAL purposes and wasn't intended for "runnuing" into rocks or "backing up" in mud-

Where did you relocate the evaporative canister? I saw armor listed for them as well. Which is better?

Make sure when choosing a front skid that you get one that wraps around underneath the Sway Disco motor like the Body Armor 4x4 one:
Body Armor JK-5123 - Body Armor 4x4 Front Bumper Skid Plate for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec
I did have to do a little cutting and drill one hole for this one but it was easy.

or the RR one: Rugged Ridge 18003.30 - Rugged Ridge Front Skid Plate for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

Some options just hang off the bumper and don't protect it that well, like the Skid Row Front skid:
Skid Row Offroad JP-5000 - Skid Row Offroad Front Chassis Skid Plates for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

I did just recently put on this one:
Body Armor JK-5123 - Body Armor 4x4 Front Bumper Skid Plate for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

I have a Rugged Ridge front bumper.

I had to sledge hammer the crap out this skid to get it to align right to the bumper.

But since it only cost me $50 on Amazon, (I had a $50 gift card) it was the right choice. I do NOT like the fact that it says "Body Armor 4x4" cut out in it.

I think the air dam has two major jobs:
Deflect air
Deflect water from the engine bay (in forward motion)

A possible third would be inspiration to buy a proper skid plate.

Looks like a good first mod, how hard are these to install?

Would probably go with the RR one since I hate that stupid body armor printed all over the other one --

I actually installed both the RR and the Skidrow together. It give full coverage for the front. The RR starts where the Skidrow ends.

I have the Mopar bumper and added the Mopar skid plate. I also stuck the stencil on.
It does have a few scrapes on it and has done it's job several times. It is real solid and attaches easily.

Or-fab

Don't know if you have already pulled the trigger on a skid but I just installed the OR-FAB Front Sway Disconnect Skid plate on my 2011 JKU Rubicon. Easy install, fits almost all bumpers (stock or aftermarket) as it bolts to the crush bar and it weighs something like 11lbs. I think you could even put back the plastic air dam after if you wanted.
