Fuel Saving Modifications

Now that I have my new 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (love it!), I was wondering if there were any modifications I can make to improve the fuel mileage. Also, does the mileage improve any after the engine is broken in? I knew going in the mileage wouldn't be great, but every little bit helps. Thanks!

I've heard that you can make a large cone out of a refridgerator box and duct tape it to the front of a jeep to make it more arrow dynamic.

Get a set of pedals, It's an unlimited so get a set of four, works just like those four people bikes you see on the boardwalk.

Be nice guys.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to WF. Unfortunately, there are not real mods that significantly contribute to better fuel economy. Your best help here is smart shifting if you have a manual tranny and light foot for both a manual or auto. You can upgrade your wheels to alloy if not already for some weight reduction and you can always run street tires with little to no aggressive treads for better MPG too. Taking the doors off your jeep or opening the soft/hard top to the elements will hurt your MPG too and just about everything else does. Jeeps get poor fuel economy regardless of what you do but you can do some of these things to help a little. If your interested in modding your computer with chips there are many threads on that very topic and what if any help they will give you for you JKU. Stick around and read...read...read as much as possible.

Use only down hill or tail wind routes.

You might as well get used to five and seven dollar a gallon gas. Long term planners for major corporations are planning for it. It will be five to seven years before we can work our way out of this mess.

Getting about 15 mpg is pretty much the norm +/-. Welcome to the world of fun.

Great looking Jeep! Gas saving secrets:
Drive up hills at 55mph or less.
Drive at 55-60mph on highways...open windows=more air resistance=more gas.
Clean you injectors every 2K miles with Techron.
Change oil and air filters often.

I just got back from my first road trip-Heidelberg to Munich- and my Jeep's sweet spot is somewhere from 65-68 MPH. There's a variety of terrain along the route, plus I found a 4-hour traffic jam, but still managed a little over 20MPG for the trip....I'm happy. The display gave my best reading of 24.8 MPG at 68 MPH just outside Munich, running 90 octane with no ethanol. Actual paper and pencil calculation says I averaged 20.4 MPG running 10% ethanol on the way out, straight gasoline on the return.
