Functional purpose of a STINGER

Probably a stupid question but what is the functional purpose of those huge stingers on the front of some bumpers?

I think on some rigs they are designed to prevent the vehicle from tipping forward and over. Probably only on race vehicles that jump and might "endo" or go end over end. On street legal Jeeps, they are probably more useful at protecting the grill from stuff and picking up chicks ;)

I imagine a "Real" stinger that can save a 4,000 lb vehicle traveling at any rate of speed and at an incline sufficient to flip it end over end would be way heavier and more robust than anything bolted on a street rig as an add-on like most are these days.
Granted there are "real" ones available and being run.
I had one on my first Rubi and I counted on it to keep the afore mentioned nastiness from going into my radiator.
I would never carry a tree around to help stop me from flipping (lol)
That is impressive though.... may have helped save a life.

I believe the more practical use of the stinger is to keep the winch cable away from the front of the rig when pulling at an odd sideways angle. Otherwise, the winch cable can damage fog lights or other adornments on the front of the Jeep.

From what I understood was years ago, buggies and trucks raced together in off road venues like Baja 1000. The high horsepower trucks would push the buggies out of the way if they didn't move over. Sometimes they would ride up on them and get entangled. The stingers were invented to keep that from happening. I do know that's where I first saw them.

On second thought, it was the buggies who were faster and would catch the trucks. They would follow closely trying to pass but the trucks threw up so much dirt and dust, they couldn't see and sometimes ran into the rear of the trucks. The bumpers would hook together. The stinger was invented to ride up the rear of the truck and slide back off without getting stuck.

There are bull bars and stingers.. they are not the same.

Bull bars are low and flat and protect the front end from large animal impacts... hence the term. Stingers are supposed to be very tall to prevent roll overs and protect the front end in the event of a roll over. There are variations that make each one more or less effective. I have a bullbar for all the deer in the area.. having one is the difference of no damage vs severe damage.. looking good and being intimidating is a nice factor as well. I'm not sure where the stinger originated, but it's purpose on jeeps is pretty well documented.
