Funny sound coming from my '09 JKU today....

While heading up to get lunch today and fill up with gas, I noticed an odd sound coming from the engine bay. I asked my two on-staff mechanics to take a quick look at it after lunch and although it sounded like it could have been a bearing in any one of the "spinning" items on the engine, it wasn't. We removed the belt, started the engine, and the noise persisted. Up on the hoist it went, and after starting it again we narrowed it down to something amiss in the starter/bellhousing area. Suspecting a hung-up starter bendix, we dropped the starter. And there the culprit revealed itself! The steel starter shim was cracked, allowing a small section of the shim to flex and make contact with the teeth of the flywheel. After welding the crack and smoothing out with a air grinder, all was reassembled.

In my best Willie Nelson accent.... "On the road again.....just can't wait to get on the road again....
