Gas light on well before empty

Hey guys, just purchased my 2012 last Wednesday and am just about done with my first full tank. The needle hasn't even approached empty, in fact the gas meter reads that I have half of a quarter (1/8th ) tank left and my gas light came on. Is this normal? I feel the gas light should not come on until I'm just above or one empty. Any feedback is appreciated!

That's normal on a JK.

It tells me how many miles I have left on my tank? I guess I didn't play around enough...

Yeah on the steering wheel you can switch between the compass/temp, average mpg, miles left, and personal settings

I'm pretty sure most modern cars have the gas light come on when you are near 30 miles estimated left in the tank. Whatever that calculation is. At least all the cars I've ever had did...

^^^ This.

Don't rely on your dial gauge, or the EVIC. My Liberty would read 12 miles till I was supposed to run outta gas, and 10 miles later it still read 12 miles.

Wrangler seems to be no more accurate.

As I mentioned in another thread, depending on what vehicle you just came from be prepared for sticker shock.

$63.50 fill up with the needle at 1/4 tank (DTE said 90 miles)

Thanks guys. So apparently the gas sensors weren't priority when they designed the Jeep, I guess I can live with that. I'll just make sure to try and stay above a quarter tank to keep my mind at ease.

I'm guessing that you will also be disappointed to learn that there is no low washer fluid warning light.

For my 2010 2x door the gas light comes on almost like clock work when the DTE is reading 40-45 miles remaining. If I pull into a gas station and fill the tank up full, it lets me put in around 14.5-15 gallons of fuel. Since the JK has an 18.6 gallon fuel tank and I average around 18+ mpg in the city, the DTE is always under reading what is actually left in the tank.

Mine comes on when I have about 50 miles left...on my Mazda, it was with about 30 left. Maybe Jeep sets it to come on early in case you're off in the middle of the woods and not paying attention? Just a thought...other vehicles aren't really in danger of running out of gas when they're that far from civilization (and yes, I realize that if you're going that far, it would be smart to bring gas with you...but, let's face it, humans have proven time and again that they are not always smart).

I noticed that once the DTE is under 30 it won't give me an estimate anymore - it just flashes 'low fuel'.

My S10 does this too. I may have another 100 miles to go and the light comes on.

All that hope and change just cost me $75 to fill up. The Jeep has a 22.5 gallon tank according to the manuals yet I only pumped in like 18.xx gallons. Either the Jeep does not have a 22 gallon tank or that empty fuel light is WAYYY off.

Running your vehicle on empty works the fuel pump allot harder. Driving your vehicle on a half a tank or more all the time will increase the odds of longevity of life of your fuel pump... just sayin folks.

I LIKE when it comes on! I live in the middle of nowhere and it's a helpful to know. I also use 100% gas so it gives me time to find good gas.

My ex is a mechanic - he used to get so annoyed that I would not fill up till the light was on and I was running on fumes. I hated the idea of going to the gas station twice as much, seemed a waste of time. In my defense, in my 20 (ok, 25) years of doing this I never once had fuel pump problems!

:shrugs:

Maybe you trade before it becomes an issue? I've got 245k on my Tahoe and the fuel pump is finally going out.

But what do I know, I just sell the things.. lol s'awl good

No, I usually crash 'em. But you are right, and I do really try now. I rarely run under 1/4 tank like I used to if I can help it. I get discounts with gas points so it seems such a waste of points to only get a 1/2 a tank!

Thats what the diesel is for... I can usually put in 25 gallons without breaking a sweat, except for my wallet... $115 last time I had to fill it without points or discounts...

I actually thought my washer lines froze this winter because the pump would run but the fluid wouldnt shoot. I had no idea we didn't have a sensor until I checked the fluid level

Yeah, I also noticed this "feature". Arguably the most inaccurate gas gauge and "distance till empty" feature I have ever experienced.

The last time I filled up it was giving the sub 30 miles left "low fuel" warning but I only put in 17 gallons, my JKU supposedly has a 22 gallon tank so I had at least 5 gallons left. Even at "city" mpg of 14 I would have almost 2.5 times the range the computer is saying.

That being said I like a fuel light, but I wish the "distance till empty" would show the miles below 30. I like running down to almost empty a couple times so I know how far I can really go.

I was chatting with one of our mechanics regarding this and he pointed out that most internal fuel pumps have only the fuel they are immersed in to cool them... Maybe Jeep realizes that these pumps are more likely to malfunction in vehicles that run on under 5 gallons in the tank?

Just guessing here... Seems logical to me though, an ounce of prevention is worth well over a pound of cure these days..
