Thumbs down Gas overflow problem?

So I've got a friend that has an 08 jeep wrangler. Whenever she fills up the tank with gas and the pump cuts off, a short moment later gas comes gushing out of the tank and down the side of her jeep. I've got a 1990 wrangler and definitely don't have this issue. I prefer mine =) However, is this common? Any fix other than not filling the tank up all the way every time? Let me know!

Yeah I just watched a video with her and she said that was exactly what happens. Looked up a few other forums and everyone pretty much says it's a new tank. It's still under warranty so that helps I guess. She's going to look into it.

Happens to me all the time too. Sometimes I simply forget that it does that and then get the nasty reminder when it's gushing out. 07 Rubicon

I have an 07. Happens every time I gas up. I'm still new with my jeep though. Hopefully I will get the hang of it soon enough.

yea my 05 does it every single time. i just dont fill it all the way ever. It really sucks because i put armorall on the fender flares and the gasoline just takes it right off. makes that fender look hideous

Same thing with my 2007. Have to re-apply the "back to black" every time.

Mentioning it here won't do any good. Need to complain higher up. Only 217 registered complaints to the nhtsa

Here's where to submit the complaint: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

My 2011 JK does not do this. Does anyone with a 2011 have this issue? I wonder if they fixed it. (probably not)

No issues here, yet. Only filled up twice though.

NTHSA reviewed Jeep Fuel Overflow

I have this same problem (08 JK 4 door, 50k miles). My problem with the overflow started about 6 weeks ago, and not happens every time I fill up. I found this forum looking for info.

I also found the following link to a Consumer Reports article about this issue from March 2011, so I thought I would link to it so other people researching the issue would get the info.

NHTSA closes investigation into Jeep Wrangler fuel-spill problem, complaints are still outstanding

Consumer Reports Text is as follows:

Last month, we updated readers on a problem with the Jeep Wrangler that the government was investigating. An undue number of current-generation Wrangler owners had complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that fuel pumps didn't shut off when refueling, leaving gasoline to spew back out of the filler neck when the tank was full.

Now NHTSA has announced that it is closing the investigation into the problem without issuing a recall. In response to NHTSA's announcement closing the investigation, Chrysler Corp., which builds the Wrangler, blames high levels of ethanol in the fuel used for the problem.

Jeep extended the warranty on the Wrangler fuel fillers, so if customers complain, the company will replace the fuel tank and filler mechanism.

We checked the database of complaints on NHTSA's website and found complaints dropped off somewhat in December last year, but the rate remains very high. More than one-third of complaints about the Wrangler are still related to fuel systems, a majority of which cited words such as "overflow," "overfill," and "spill."

If you have this problem, contact your local Jeep dealership to have the fix performed. For more information, contact Chrysler customer service at: 1-800-853-1403.

I bought my ,07 JUK last September and had this problem from day one. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a well known issue with the check valve and they replaced the entire fuel tank at no charge. Not sure if this is something everyone can do or if it was covered under my extended warranty.

There is a known issue with this, but also make sure that you stop adding fuel after it shuts off the first time. If you try to add more after the first stop, it's going to go all over. That's what "DO NOT TOP OFF" means.

Call D/C (Jeep) Customer care 877.759.5427

Tell them what is happening and they may replace your tank.

X-32 extended warranty inlet check valve (fuel spit up)

They did on one of mine, a 2008 JKU free of charge. This was 3 months ago, no spit ups since.

They were great to deal with, local dealer took care of it.

This used to happen to me all the time, I just started watching the amount the pump was putting in and around 13 gallons if my low gas light was on I switch the pump to the slower auto fill tab and it cuts off just fine without spilling a drop out of the filler neck.

Have an 07 JKU - happens at every fill up if I'm not careful. Looking at 2012 models now - hope it's fixed.

It's a check valve (rollover valve) in the tank. Air has to exit as fuel fills it. The ball gets corroded/stuck. They fixed mine for free, it was out of warranty. Fix involves dropping and replacing tank.

You should get it fixed if they wil do so. No sense spilling fuel on your clothes or slow filling a tank.

No, didn't pay for diagnosis. Called the # told them it was likely the tank. Cleaned vent behind light. They did a vin lookup and did some other recall work as well.

They gave me a warranty work # and said go to a dealership with the info. It's daughters Jeep, she went and all the service writer did was the recall work (fender hack job near brake line, trans lines, etc). Didn't do tank initially (which was why I called). Drove to dealer and told writer that's why I sent her and purposely told her to take it there on a low fuel tank (since they have to drop it). Bonehead writer said they had a tank in stock and did it the following week. No overflow issues since and that was a few months back. Before fix it burped up almost everytime.

FWIW, while this was bought used, DC knew I had bought 7 new vehicles (it was actually 8) from them and were very quick to get it resolved, to the point where they called me every week to see if it got fixed and how the experience was.

I would call the DC customer service #, tell them what is going on (Burping fuel at fillup) and ask if they'll do the replacement.

Wranglers don't get good fuel mileage, which means if your 18 yr. old daughter isn't filling it all the way up, there's a better chance she'll try to stretch the range and run out of gas commuting to school and back.

Zero cost.
