Gas spills when filling up

Filled up the tank in my Jeep for just the second time today. Both times I have filled up, gas has come pouring back out of the opening when topping off.

I filled the tank until the first "stop". Let it settle a few seconds, and then continued. The second "stop" (about a gallon later) resulted in gas spilling out everywhere down the side, on the bumper, fender, my hands etc.

I am not above just stopping and calling it done on the first stop and not topping it off. I am just curious if this is normal and what others see. I am still learning all these nuances of Jeep ownership.

Yep, mine does it too. Don't top it off.
I've actually had mine do it on the first stop, though usually only a couple ounces or so. Still annoying.

same. on my last vehicle, you couldn't top off at all either, so i've gotten pretty used to just letting it stop wherever it stops.

One thing I noticed - don't jam the shaft of the pump all the way into the neck (WOW, that's gonna get a response)... Once I started doing this, the "burps" stopped completely...

good tip. will give it a try.

my main concern is that the spilling gas will mess up the Zaino finish I am getting ready to put on it

This is currently an ongoing complaint, may turn into a TSB or Recall.

I took my 2010 Rubicon into the dealership because everytime I fill it up gas goes everywhere (I'm not topping off) the dealer had it for over a day and can't find anything wrong....I've tried not having the nozzle to far in and it doesn't help either.

Mine does this as well.. I let it click then pull the pump out a bit then top off it seems to work if I don`t get carried away with the lever. I also put the auto fill catch on the first notch.

I have had this problem in my 07 JKU for the past year. The dealer said some release valve is stuck and the entire tank would need to be replaced - for about $550. So far, I have decided never to "fill" my tank.

should be covered under warranty? The valve is too keep fuel from spilling on you during a rollover too, it might be worth getting fixed..

Gas

It happens to me all the time. We're pouring money on the ground (and all over the bottom of our Jeeps)! Linda

It seems it is a pressure thing. fuel going in is greater than air coming out. As per earlier post it seems there must be a anti-spill flap or valve that burps when in flow is stopped. My TJ never did this until approx a year ago. So I would think it is wear and tear on internal parts. I have not filled up my JK yet but I will see Monday and post. I like to go full throttle on the gas pump when I am in New Orleans because of the vermin hanging around the pumps and station. No time to go slow. I am in the country right now so I can put it on slow at the pump and see what it does.
