GASCAP Sensor !!! WTF!!

I have had a aftermarket gas cap for 1 yr...and the other day the gascap warning light comes on. Removed cap, cleaned cap and gas fill res. and the warning light went away.

2 weeks later it happens again...I wipe clean the same parts...warning light goes away.

Both times it occurred I would say nothing seemed dirty, but the wiping worked?!?!

HELP...plz

(2011 JKU)

I found mine to be pretty wonky too. are you getting a code?

My issue is that I never screwed on the cap (ill never figure out how I managed that) and it was just sitting there inside the door and I got 2 codes. the small leak and the large leak codes. never got a gascap warning until I investigated and closed the cap. unbeknownst to me I had closed the cap lanyard in the cap, and that gave me a gascap indication. took about a day for the indication to go away.

From what I understand it is a sensor that reads the pressure in the tank, so if the cap is lose it will come on. May be the aftermarket cap is not sealing well enough, may be has worn over the year...

Go to the dealer and buy the stock locking cap that has the lock tumbler keyed to the Jeep. It's the only one I've seen that doesn't throw codes after awhile. It will set you back a bit, mine was about $85 once I bought the cap and paid for keying it to the Jeep. Worth it in the long run though.

If he's resetting the code himself it may not be the gas cap at all, it could be a small leak in the evap line. I ran I to this myself. If you reset it yourself and drive approx 100 miles the light will come back on.

thnx for the responses guys...I have NOT cleared the codes myself...just wiped out the inside of the fill neck and the "gascap" light turned off (no codes per say).

So many sensors!! I waiting for the "fart" sensor to come on next time I let one loose!!

Its been aprox. 500-100 miles and the light has not came back on so far....

I had the same thing, since i hunt i wanted a locking gas cap. well, it through off codes so after two times, i decided to keep both. when i hunt i put the locking on, when i get ready to drive before i start it, i put the stock on. no problems and i dont have to worry about people fooling around with my gas. all this for 12 dollars lol
