Getting a new Big Bear 4x4, rustproofing?

Just picking up my first JKU 2017, big bear edition and heard nightmare stories of rusting. I heard about por15 and eastwood. But is it necessary to rustproof? And if the dealer has the option, should I take it? Wondering because I plan to keep this car for awhile and invest money in it. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Getting the MasterShield undercoating from the dealer is always a great option! I've gotten it on all my Jeeps. Another thing to do right front the start is Fluid Film. This stuff is a godsend! If you're unfamiliar with the product, read the sticky from under the JK General Discussion section of this fourm titled "The end-all Fluid Film thread" Lot's of great information there. My suggestion would don't stress over rust. Every brand new Wrangler on the lot has rust somewhere. Take a good loot underneath yours and I guarantee you'll find rust somewhere.

Enjoy the new Jeep. Cheers!

Give the thread a read. It'll tell you everything you need to know about how to use the product. What to spray, what not to spray.

(Prety much like a WD-40 can and you just spray it on)

Do it straight away! What's the point of waiting. once it starts to rust it's too late. If you don't do it pretty much right away don't bother. Saying that Fluid Film will stop rust from getting worse and spreading. Try to find a dealer in the area who does undercoating. or tell your dealer it's mandatory for them to find somewhere to do it.

Appreciate the posts, its just if I undercoat it right away. The issue would be when I lift the car, it would ruin the undercoating. I know its temporary the fluid spray, so perhaps do it right away then when its lifted and new tires get it undercoated?

I always have a few cans of rustoleum statin black spray paint on hand. Every few months I crawl under and spray anything that is rusting. It goes right on, lasts a long time, and stops the rust from getting worse. The only thing I haven't painted is the stock driveshaft because I don't want to affect the balance of it. It looks terrible though.

My driveshaft was rusty when I bought my Rubi. Had been thinking about spraying it with rust killer that turns the rust black. You indicate that it might affect the balance.... have others, to your knowledge done that? I have touched up everything thing I can except the driveshaft..... it sure is a rusty - if only superficial - standout. Any further thoughts from others on this?

I think once you lay on fluid film, you can kiss any chances of later painting or coating anything goodbye.

I wouldn't undercoat either. That stuff can crack and retain water and make rust even worse. Paint or POR-15 is the best. I like rustoleum because it's cheap, easy to apply and it's bullet proof and sticks to anything. My buddy just did his frame in POR-15. It's rock hard, looks awesome, but he said it was a bitch to paint on and a week later his legs were still sporting POR-15 blotches that won't clean off.

My conclusion is bite the bullet and POR-15 everything for a one time super effective fix, or hit with spray paint every few months, or fluid film every few months. I've never used fluid film, so this is a guess, but I'd be worried everything will be wet with oil/film when trying to work on it down the road.

Was worried sick, kind of trading in a car from my aunt who passed away and would like to keep this car as long as possible so the rust worries me alot.
+1 on the fluid film and rust oleum. I'm not familiar with jeeps factory undercoating but I had a previous f150 undercoated by a very reputable shop in my area and i wouldn't do it again, esp after my positive experience with fluid film.
How often should I fluid film? I heard 6 months to a year, etc. Read the forum linked and still varies.
