getting my feet wet!

just entered into jeep wrangler world--bought an 07 unlimited this week and i love it! Few quick pieces of advice, as i have been perusing the threads and i can't quite find what i'm looking for....

What is your opinion on removable soft tops(ie, the ones that are quick on/off for summertime-i live in illinois--that cost 2-300 bucks)? which ones work best/are most reliable? certainly i won't be doing a lot of off-roading, so that's not an issue...

also, i have a standard factory audio setup and would like to upgrade without spending a fortune. is it a waste of time to buy 4 new 6.5" speakers and install them without changing out the factory stereo? and are those little dash tweeters difficult to get out?

sorry if i'm asking questions that are already answered out there, kinda new at this whole thing.

Congrats...I just re-entered the Jeep world myself (had a '97 Wrangler, then an Element, now back to a '10 Unlimited). I had a "bikini" top once, and that was super fast and easy to use, and not very expensive. I would check out bestop for more info on that.

Are you looking for a full coverage top or a good bikini?
I have both and I rarely use the full top. The plastic windows have never even been on it.
During the summer months, I am bikini only. If this is what you are looking for, check out this thread. http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/bikini-top-35953.html

Since you said that you won't be doing a lot of off roading, I would be careful to find out how noisy the one you settle on is. I hear a lot of talk about how bikini's flutter a lot at highway speeds. If it were me purchasing one that is one issue that would matter to me. I love off roading and mine is my daily driver.

Welcome Aboard, Shipmate!

LOTS of options out there! Depends on the following:

1. Do you want just the Brief Top, which covers only the Driver and Passenger?
2. Do you want the Safari Top, which covers the Driver, Passenger, and the Backseat Passengers?
3. Do you want a Solid Panel like the Soft Top Material?
4. Do you want a Mesh Panel, that will breath, but will allow rain to come through?
5. Do you want a Bikini Top that DOES Require a Header (A HEADER will connect to the Bikini Top, and Clamp to your Footman's Loops up front, exactly like your Soft Top does now.)? With the Header in place, you will have to remove the Bikini Top, before you can put your Soft Top back up, as it clamps to the same Footman's Loops as the Bikini Header does.
6. Do you want a Bikini Top that DOES NOT Require a Header? These are extremely easy and quick to put on, are made of Mesh Material, and your Soft Top will install right over it, without having to remove the Bikini Top.

I know..... a LOT of choices, aren't there? Here are some GREAT Quality Bikini Tops, which should cover just about any style you choose.

Bikini Tops Requiring Headers:

J.C. Whitney Rampage Bikini Tops (Link)

Bestop Bikini Tops At Quadratec (Link)

Bikini Mesh Tops NOT Requiring Headers:

SpiderWeb Shade (Link)

Dirtydog 4x4 Sun Screens (Link)

I currently own a SpiderWeb Shade SW1 JK-2D Model, but I'm asking Santa for a Dirtydog Brief Top, which will cover just the Driver and Passenger. These two tops allow me to pull my Soft Top over either one, without removing them. I've had my SW1 on the Hwy quite often, at speeds over 70mph, and I don't get any flapping whatsoever. I've read that the same goes for the Dirtydog as well, which is why I'm wanting to try it out.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away!

Again, Welcome to WF!

BTW, please post pics when you can! Thanks!

Cheers!

thanks for the info...good questions for me to ponder...I am thinking that I like the ideo of a mesh top like the sw or dd which would allow me to spend most of the summer with the top off without getting fried, but still let me pull over and get the soft top on if a wrath-of-God storm breaks out--I live in Illinois, so it doesn't happen often, but when it does, look out.

btw, I noticed your audio set-up. Is it useless to improve the speakers without changing the head, or will that at least improve audio quality enough to buy me some time to save my pennies? also, did you put the speakers in yourself? I think I could do it, but those pop-up tweeters in the dash seem a little daunting...

Sounds like the top issue is well under way so I'll touch on the audio.

YES replacing the speakers is a great way to improve the sound coming out of the factory headunit. The OEM non-infinity speakers are cheap plastic & paper trash. Replaced them with some T3 audio components. Best "bang for the buck" mod I've done to date.

Oh and the tweets, there's a small screw on the backside of the housing. Remove it and the tweets pop right out.

To answer your questions:

1. Not at all! I had the Stock RES Radio (Single CD Player, with Stock Speakers...), when I bought my X. Usually, a Speaker Upgrade is a good start. ScottRock nailed it, when he said above, that the Non-Infinity Speakers are cheap plastic and paper trash. I couldn't believe it, when I saw mine. Cheap as cheap can get!

With the below setup I have now, I've got a GREAT sounding system. I've got so much Bass with the Alpine's, I don't even need a Sub-Woofer. An Amp is a MUST though! The Stock Radio is a much better system than I first thought. I was all ready to switch out the Head Unit after the Speaker swap, but I don't need to. Perfect just like it is.

2. No, I had Best Buy do my upgrades for me. I'm as good with Electrical things, as I am with Plumbing.

Scott's already addressed the Tweeters, but here's the rest with some pics, if you decide to swap out your Head Unit and Speakers:

Speakers. Scroll to the bottom. You want Pages 20-23 for the Wrangler:

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

i really want to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome...truly, i am a neophyte, never even having owned a truck before. i now have some good info to go on--i'm going to take a look at the spiderweb and dirtydog for tops, as well as the bestop. cant wait for deep snow or warm breezes! unfortunately, in illinois, i'm stuck in the cold/overcast/no snow nether zone that features neither...

i am going to look at some speaker options re: your posts above. it seems that from mult places i've looked at, rockford and polk seem to produce the best low-end response in a small speaker.

I looked, and sure enough, the dash tweets come right out--a question for you, scottrock--if I buy a component speaker, can I just wire the tweets right in where the factory tweets are, or do i have to re-wire the whole thing with the provided crossovers?
