Getting spare key made

I'm wanted to get a spare key made to hide in the vehicle in case I lose my set on the lake. I keep a spare ignition key in a tuffy box in the rear but I'd need to unlock the rear gate to get to it.

I don't this spare to work the ignition. Just the door locks. Anyone run into any issues getting this done at any random place that makes keys?

Jeep dealers will make you a spare key - it's not expensive at all, but.
The key is only good for the locks, not the ignition, I was told if you try to start the car with it - you might disable the car for 24 hours - it's a flat key for just the locks.

That's what I'm needing. Don't need the expensive ignition key. Just something for the doors so I can to my "real" key.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is what I did and it works like a charm. I was told a few times on this forum that It wouldn't work.
I need a steel key without the electronic fob to take in the water when I go kayaking and SUP-ing.
I went to ACE hardware and had a plain jane key made for about $4.00.
When I get to the water, I toss my ignition key into the glove box and lock it. Then I close all of my doors and lock them manually.
Now my doors are locked, my regular key is locked away and I don't have to worry about getting an expensive key wet.
It works perfectly. The steel key will start the jeep, but it only stays running for less than 5 seconds. AND it did not disable my jeep.
Do it,,, it works great.
That's my plan. Just don't want to get off the water and find I'm unable to get to my real key.
Hitting the lake next weekend so hope to get this done before then. I'm guessing the first few places I try may not have the correct blanks to make it.
When I bought my Jeep, I went down to Ace Hardware and had 2 spare steel keys made. I keep one key in my wallet and another hidden in one of those magnetic boxes on the frame.
If I happen to lock myself out, I'm covered. If I happen to lock myself out with my wallet still inside (and that's happened to me more than once...) I'm still covered, just also covered in whatever dirty nastiness I happen to have parked in as well.
Either way, I'm never locked out.
Soft top so I'm never really "locked out".
But if cant open the rear gate, I can't open my tuffy cubby hole box. Which is where I out my keys when in the lake.
I've been meaning to get a steel key made so I can stash it some place really hard to get to. I should probably get a chipped key made as well.
Had one made, it will unlock the door but will set off the alarm. When you retrieve the "real" key you can turn the alarm off.
You can get a full functioning key from the dealer as well just doesn't have the remote it cost me 70 from the dealer, keep it in my wallet. if i just wanted to unlock the door they wanted 50, so 20 more so it will start and run everything wasn't bad
My JK only came with one key so I went down to my local True Value store and they have a machine to program and cut a new key. It cost me $80 and it opens the doors and starts the ignition. The only think it doesn't offer is keyless entry.
If you get a regular old key made just for the doors, you don't have to worry about the chip or it getting wet.
I have soaked mine many times already, I have a bad habit of ending up in water, and it has the chip and it is fine. The key itself looks like Chrysler keys from the 90's
Managed to get a "steel" key made but when I unlock the door, manually, the alarm sounds. Any way to disable the alarm from going off when manually unlocking the door?
No way to disable it, you just have to put the key in the ignition and turn it on, or hit unlock on the key fob.
This. I swim with my key. It's been underwater for hours and still starts my jeep
Here is a good place to get Made in the USA, transponder keys for your Jeep (uncut) for a very reasonable price.
Transponder Chip Ignition Keys for Jeeps & Chryslers on Sale
As low as $16.99 each (in quantities of 3). You will have to take this uncut key to a locksmith or hardware store and have it cut. Usually only costs a few bucks to cut.
You can then program it yourself per instructions in your owner's manual. If you don't have a full owner's manual, you can download one here for free:
Jeep Owners | Download an Owners Manual 2004 - 2013 | Jeep
So reading through this thread, I haven't seen any say that just by using the un-chipped steel key to unlock the doors will do anything to disable the vehicle, correct?
It will set off the alarm (if active)?
It will start the vehicle for 2 seconds and POSSIBLY disable the vehicle for 24 hours? (I haven't seen in the manual where it mentions disabling the vehicle for a day. Can anyone confirm? And under what circumstances it would do that?)
The reason I ask these questions is that the local hardware guy told me he had a bad experience where the local fire department had bought a new Jeep, and had a door key cut. But when they used it, it diabled the vehicle - just from unlocking the door manually. Now I am getting this story second hand, and didn't witness it, so I just wanted to get some other feedback from you all that have done this.
Also, will the alarm sound if you open the hood to retrieve your hidden key?
Thanks!
I've used my steel key numerous times and it works fine. I did set the alarm off once by unlocking with the steel key after it had been locked with the fob.
I also tried to start my jeep with the steel key. It ran for a few seconds and shut off. I have never disabled my jeep by doing this.
All that you are doing is manually locking the doors,,, it will be fine.
I know this isn't the sexy money saving move. But, I just had the local dealer make me a full on chipped key fob spare key. I asked nicely for a discount and they gave me $40 off the full price. $190 out the door.
