Off of what platform? I can't see GM developing a new platform just to compete with the Wrangler. They haven't forgotten the lesson of the Solstice, it takes a lot of time and money to crack a market with such an established player.

If they can modify their mid size Colorado pick up platform to make a Wrangler competitor then maybe.

This is the source article from WSJ:

GM Considering Adding Rugged SUV to GMC Brand - WSJ

IMO, the more options the merrier. It will no nothing but validate and light a fire under Jeep to make the Wrangler better.

However, in classic GM fashion by the time GMC stops "thinking" about it, the 2018 JL, the new Range Rover Defender and possibly the Ford entry will be on the market and GMC will have to think about if it is still worth it.

There is NO competition for the Jeep nor will there ever will be.

GMC will not build a two door SUV, or JK fighter, or what ever the crack smoking dude from Fox is trying to make us believe. GMC won't even make a regular cab pickup with the big V8 anymore. GM has gone down a slippery slope of producing geezer crap and I really don't see them going in to a different market.

One of the sites had an article on this,, basically polling the dealer body. If given the go ahead as of today, would take at least 3 yrs to design, test etc and then more resources to tool up a plant to make it. So would be min of 3-5 yrs out if green lighted today which wont happen.

Author seemed to feel GM would be up against pretty much the most loyal customers who buy Wranglers, hence he doubts this will happen.

How much money did GM shovel into Hummer and then pulled the plug?

"F-150 SVT Raptor outsold the entire Nissan Titan pickup lineup in 2014, both suggesting that there’s a strong demand for this type of vehicle."

The type of vehicle might have something to do with it, Nissan customer service/support making Jeep's look like a full-on white glove treatment is the other part of that equation...

If the Jeep Wrangler had some competition maybe it would relax the prices a bit and also get some free options which right now we have to all pay for. I am surprised GM is even contemplating building Hummer again they do not sell to well for GM. Pulled off the shelf like Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab Isuzu. I have worked for GM as a dealer Tech for 26 years, and own 2 Jeeps no GMs in my driveway. I will drive a Jeep vehicle till the day I die and they bury me in a mound and raise a rune stone in memory of me and my beloved Wrangler. That's as long as Jeep does not screw up the next generation Wrangler because I plan on buying one in the future, if it wasn't for the Wrangler I would not even own a Chrysler product well maybe a GC, and after driving a pickup for over 12 years you could not get me in one of them ever again. Gas guzzling over rated vehicles that are a pita to park and bore me to death to drive daily. Just my 2 cents.

Why not? The 2017 Jeep JL Wrangler is likely going to IFS according to inside sources.

This vehicle would be great competition...maybe Wranglers would stop increasing in price 3% annually.
