I own a 2009 jeep wrangler X 3 door with a few upgrades. I have owned this jeep less than a week it now has about 650 miles on it. today I was drivingand you could smell a nasty ordor it was a definate clutch. My clutch is now smoked with like i said under 700 miles. Jeep claims under no circumstances does the lifetime powertrain or any warranty covera clutch. not to toot my own horn but I have been driving stick for over 12 years blowing a clutch @ UNDER 700 MILES IS MY FAULT.......HELP. this is making me never want to buy a jeep again
at 700 miles its under factory warrenty. roll up your sleves and go talk to the service manager if that dont work start a lemon law case at 700 miles the only thing to smoke the clutch would be the tranny its self
I have to ask, also, is the clutch slipping? Any odd sounds? A smell alone could simply be a new clutch breaking in. That's absolutely normal. Almost all brand new cars have funky smells- oil/grease/poo burning off of exhaust/engine bits, cat break-in, and all kinds of odd odors. Relax, take a deep breath (of fresh air, away from the Jeep ), and analyze it from a step back- Mark W.
I test drove two Jeeps before I bought mine. The first one had 1 mile on it when I started, and I brought it back with 50 miles and it had that "burnt clutch" smell. Then I bought one with 2 miles on it and I have yet to get that smell. I was told by the dealer they all at some point during break-in will get that smell...which he hates on test drives because it scares a lot of people. If it is not slipping or popping out of gear I would give it some time. Also if it does end up being FUBAR'd check with another dealer. Although they are a wearable part it should still be covered with less than 1000 miles.

IMHO the dealer should at least pop the cover off and inspect it to see what it looks like. I don't service my own vehicles but seem to recall that most vehicles that I have owned (all standards save 2) were able to be inspected for clutch wear somehow but not absolutely sure on that. Is there an access panel for inspection?

I live in CA and the book they gave me powertrain warranty book they gave me w/ my new '09 2 door states that the clutch is covered up to 12k. You should still be under warranty for that part. Check out you powertrain warranty booklet then show the dealer and make them fix it.
I have an 08 and it's an automatic. It smelled something terrible. smelled just like a clutch that was shot. long story short finally went away at 2,000 miles. It was really scary on a new jeep thinking I got this problem and everyone telling me it will go away. hope that's all it is.
