Going to order Jeep..Option advise

Hello all,

First, glad to be here and hope to be a help to others one day as I learn this truck. I am a member of many car forums as I have many different type of cars and LOVE to mod and learn all I can about them. I am really excited to purchase the new jeep and will of course do a few mods as I go.

I am going to order a 12' Wrangler Sahara when I get back in country on the 6th of April. I went to the Jeep website and 'built' the jeep I want to order and thought I would post here to see if I made good choices, or if there are things I should add or take off.

This will be mainly for on road use as I have an off road jeep (toy) already.

Money is open for this buy so not an issue as far as options.

With this in mind, this is what I am thinking of ordering:

Color
Black forest green (out)
Blk/ Dark Saddle (in)

18" painted wheels (they will be scrapped first)
3.21 Gears
5 speed auto
Remote start
730N media
Leather trimmed seats
Auto temp air controls
Body color 3 piece hard top
Duel top group
Trailer tow group
Connectivity Group
Chrome group by Mopar

I think those are all the options I got or saw on the site.

So, look ok? Anything you would recommend changing or adding that I have not?

Thanks for any help!!

IMO you will want to change your gear ratio from 3.21 if you expect any performance while towing or if you ever want to go with bigger tires. I'm surprised you can spec the tow group with 3.21.

I've never liked chrome on any jeep but that's just me.

I would also not get the dual top. I have it and it's more of a pain than a pleasure. I wish I had just gotten the hard top. While I do switch to the soft I wish I would have just purchased it aftermarket.

x2! Go with the 3.73 gears, it only costs $50 to switch them when ordering. I believe the max tow package on the Unlimited automatically switches it to 3.73, but not on the 2dr for some reason

Thanks guys!
The only thing I will be towing will be my Kayak trailer which is very light. I wont be putting big tires on this one as I already have a jeep with those . I got the 3.21 as I figured it would give me the best gas milage. Good advise though!!

Now I will rethink getting both tops! I figured I would like to have the soft top in case I got stuck in some bad weather, but if it is not worth it, I may not. Thank you!

Ahh, well that is 2 votes to change gears...Hummm.
This will be the 4 door jeep I will be getting, I did not say that in my original post...oops

I am not a fan of chrome either, I just mainly wanted the fuel door. Maybe I can pick that up aftermarket?

Yeah, go with 3.73 and Limited slip, too. Those are expensive aftermarket.

I ordered mine with side airbags.

Mostly to prevent my last words from being "You know... That side air bag option really didn't cost very much"

I know many jeepers guffaw about the safety stuff.

Don`t forget cruise control and heated seats. I put a hitch on the front to use with a "T" bar with a light bar (no lights) over the windshield to haul my ship.

Remote start is only like $185 I think. Priceless on cold winter mornings.

Gears
Remote start
Just hard top(get soft aftermarket )
Side air bags

I would also recommend NOT getting factory nav. Instead order upgraded sound system and then order a nav from Crutchfield or somewhere. Can get a much better after market navigation with steering wheel integration for around 1,100-1,400. Which is less than factory.

"back in country" are you out of country and in the Military?

If so, no need to wait to order, in fact, it may be better to order from there and pick it up at home....

My advice, get 3.73 gears. Skip the Nav and auto temp controls. Nav is way overpriced and a lot complain about the auto temp contol. Wouldn't bother with the chrome group either, pure $$$ for silly cosmetic stuff - money would be better spent elsewhere. I also wouldn't do the color matched top, two-tone interior or BFG. The last 4 are more personal taste though and you will be the one paying for it.

I chose the chrome package with my build. It's not overstated an suits me just fine. Make sure you get 3.73 gears though.

Now I need to find some new wheels.

Jim

I mentioned remote start, but you had already listed it, I didn't see. Heated seats. Not sure if they automatically come with leather but they are DEFINITELY worth it.

Limited slip, probably 3:73 if going bigger/towing. My opinion is to skip the chrome, navigation and auto temp. Remote start is nicely priced as well.

Wow, great tips guys!
Yes, the seats are listed as being heated (which I live in Mississippi so it does not get that cold).
I did not know you could get the gas door in black (which I would rather have), so I will be looking into that!
I am getting the nav more for resale value as I find it help in future sales, I just use my phone most of the time if I need it.
It is still a tossup for me as far as gears go. I have a truck I use for heavy hauling and I think the only thing I would ever pull with the jeep would be my Kayak trailer with the kayaks or bikes (I do triathlons), so very light stuff.
I dont think I had the limited slip on my list so I think I will add that!

Thanks guys!

Yo...

I agree with some of the posts above. Consider more gear. I got an 07 with a bunch of mods that was upgraded to a much better gear because I had to given the mods I had done.

I thought the Sahara's now come with a 3.88s gear?

In addition to my 07 JK monster, I bought an '11 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited in October 2011 brand new and immediately had black rock wheels and pro comp 33's put on it. It is my everyday machine not my deer hunting machine like the 07 which has 3' inch lift and 35' Mickeys, but even getting the pro comp all terrains which are only an inch more in diameter, it is sluggish.

And I have the tow package and everything on it, I think the gear is 3.88s.

More gear Jeep! Please!

3.21 doesn't necessarily mean better gas mileage. Actually in the city the 3.73 will get better mileage as it want have to down shift as much. You will get better with 3.21 on the highway when it is level or down hill but not on uphill stretches.

Not sure why they even offer 3.21. It is the worst set of gears for a Jeep period even for the 2012.

Do not get the 3.21, it will be a mistake. Especially if you get bigger tires later. About the only option that 3.21 might get you a better situation is with the small 16" wheels with the 29" tires that comes on a basic sport.

Chrome won't get you home plus it looks bad on a Jeep.. So good call on that removal. The only thing I still don't seem to grasp is the factory limited slips.. The ones that were offered in the ZJ's, XJ's, WJ's, TJ's, LJ's were known to wear out and stop working after awhile.. Clutch pack bassed I think... Did they change that for the JK's??? If not maybe choose for the open differential and add a aftermarket limited slip.. Might cost more but at least it wouldn't wear out and stop working.. Of course if Jeep changed to a gear based limited slip then factory is all good..

It's just a thought.. Something I would do but it's not the most popular opinion I think

The 3.21 gears are out (thanks to y'all) .

As for the LS , I am not sure what they use as I want not going to get the option at first, but I will be checking into it for sure!
