Hey all, trying to decide between Goodyear MT/R Kevlars or Nitto Trail Grappler M/Ts? Our JKU is 70-80% off road use. Any other tire opinions beyond these two brands certainly would be appreciated also.

Thanks,
Bubba

Had the MTR's, now have the trail grapps

MTR's are way lighter, have great traction off road, a PITA in to balance and keep balance, decent on the pavement.

Trail Grapps are real heavy, super easy to balance, great on the road, good off road in the rocks, decent in the mud, not as good as MTR's.

I was happy with the 35 MTR's, but had a hard time really keeping them balanced after every wheeling trip. So i decided when i went to 37's i would try the TG's. So far i have been real happy with them.

I would take the Toyo Open Country tires over the Nitto's but they are both very heavy. The Toyo's are also fairly stiff but tough. The asymmetric thread on the MTR/K was never my thing even though I've always liked Goodyear tires, until a member of our family group swapped his Toyo's for the MTR's. I ride or drive her JK quite often with 37x12.5 and the tires are light enough so it feels like its riding on 35s. They perform very well in all types of terrain. The only drawback is the tread can tend to wear unevenly off road and it makes them difficult to keep balanced. If my Jeep spent more time on the rocks or mud it would be one of my top contenders next to the MTZ to replace my KM2s.

The old adage that "each 10 lbs of wheel weight is equivalent 100 lbs of cargo weight" is more or less true particularly with large diameter off road tires which have a lot of the weight on the perimeter of the wheel. Unsprung weight matters but the rotational moment of inertia to spin heavy wheels matters even more. The MTR's are one of the lightest tires where as the other tow are some of the heaviest ... it's your choice.

I never had any issues slipping, not on the pavement, not in the mud. Only problem I had was they slung shit all over the side of the jeep and couldn't ever keep it clean.

first world problems i know.....

Nittos are simply too heavy for me.

In snow, the MTRs are not as bad as the KMs but the DuraTracs are much better. I have 4.10s and 35 and the gearing annoys me when I start going up the mountain highways. It is acceptable on flat land and probably perfect with 33s. Unless I am going offloading or exploring some potentially tough trails, I prefer to take the 4runner. I'll probably regear this year but these home improvements may put a damper on that plan.
