So a guy I work with picked up an old Hadley Truck horn and offered it to me for cheap. I assumed I could just hook an air tank to it and run a wire to use it, but it's an old cable pull style horn.
Is there any way that I could hook this up on my jeep? Ideally I'd like to do away with the cable pulley and have it set up on a switch. But I'm not sure if that's possible. I guess there's the option I could run the cable through the firewall and pull it when I want to use it, but I dont see that as a long term solution. This wont replace my stock horn, its more just for fun and to scare my wife when I ask her to check my blinker fluid for me.
If you want to do away with the cable pull system and don't mind doing a bit of backyard engineering, I would look into attaching a linear actuator to the cable pull.
Depending on how much movement you need to actuate the horn you might be able to use a door lock actuator to operate the horn, those are cheap and readily available otherwise you may be looking at using a servo or linear actuator those options vary widely.
If you can access the valve that the cable is hooked to and remove it then plug the hole that the cable went into and buy 12 volt air solenoid and install it into the air line.
I actually found the part to replace the cable pull with the solenoid through a hadley catalog. Now if I can just figure out how to wire it up, with a compressor and tank I'd be good to go!
