My concern is there will be little to no bass response with the top off. In my 2 door I put my 10" sub back there behind the seat and there is a significant difference as opposed to having it in it's normal spot, directly behind the driver and passenger.

I wonder if using the factory enclosure with a better sub would be a better option - you would still have storage.

Hello all-
Sorry for no updates. Been out wheeling so I've haven't had much time to tinker. The sub is in and there is plenty of bass. But.....we'll have to re-work it a little. Though it fits perfectly in the hollow- I didn't realize the stock cover has an indentation in it. We'll have to make adjustments. My FIL is in town briefly next weekend so I'll post more detail at that point (and some pics).
We did toy with the idea of the stock sub spot- but the shape is all wrong. Plus you have room for only one speaker. While yes- this doesn't fire down either- there is some resistance and you have more wattage.

Having toyed around with subwoofers in different locations in my JKU I have to say that the cargo area is less than ideal for the soundstage. I can live with my shallow-mount 10" downfiring sub back there, though in that configuration the carpet removes a bit of the tightness of the bass. Ok for country, rap, etc, but not for reproducing a kick drum. A side or upfiring 10" Polk Momo sub I also have sounds like crap with the top off at any speed over about 25mph.

My next project will involve a glassed enclosure with an 8" sub under the driver seat. I am thinking that will end up giving the best results without having to adjust gain and eq each time the hardtop goes on or off.

I'm interested if it will get the big lump out of my rear cargo area. I bought the 4 door and have that silly sub sitting right there in the doorway. I am not a stereo buff but like to listen sometimes. If this sounds as good as the factory one does and gives me back that space then I'm in for one when your ready.

Sorry so long since an update. Pesky jobs keep getting in the way:

We've made a couple of minor design changes so a new prototype is being made. But my sub has been in since July. (Seriously; its been that long? Where does the time go?). We used a compact Rockford Fosgate PBR300X2 sub amp- which fit perfectly on the side of the driver's side door footwell area and also installed it with the optional remote bass boost knob, which allows up to 18bd of bass boost at 45Hz (since the stock HU only boosts the bass at a much higher frequency). Overall I am very pleased with this set-up for the money.
  • The sub is "locked" in via bolting it down to the existing bolt hole in the bottom of the drain plug. See pic. I've done a lot of wheeling (read: Jeep jarring) since then and it hasn't budged one iota. Inexpensive foam tape was used on the bottom and surround of the unit to make sure there wasn't any metallic resonance. Our plan is to include a self stick high density EPDM pad than can used when installing the sub to eliminate any vibration or resonance between the enclosure and body tub. This pad will only be necessary if you have a late model (2010+) JK that doesn't have carpeting in the rear storage compartment. Newer JK's have a plastic liner that will be removed before installing the sub enclosure.
  • The enclosure has sat in standing water for several days with no damage. I washed the Jeep with the top off- everything got soaked. Sub was fine.
  • Attached is the pre-production frequency curve. Frequency peak is below 40 Hz, which is very good for a sub enclosure this size.
  • The enclosure on the new prototype will inset the drivers an additional 1/2" so that a heavy duty drill can be flush mounted on the surface of the enclosure without making contact with the drivers even during extreme cone travel. This flush grill cover will alsohelp add support for when heavy items are placed in the cargo area and will be designed to accommodate the step down in the flap that folds down over this area, so no modifications to the cargo area will need to be made.
  • The new enclosure will be a roto-molded design and will have slightly thicker walls with additional internal bracing to limit any flex on the enclosure and help minimize any distortion at high bass levels. We will also take a new frequency curve once we have the new enclosure, so stay tuned.
"Driveway" testing has revealed that bass is much better than the Infinity system- and also noticeably better than a custom 10" box installed in a JKU. Haven't gone up against an Alpine (yet).....
Gunner- if you're going to Seven Oaks it would be perfect- we can test against your Alpine. I plan to test the sub. against several Jeeps at this event. I won't be able to record true audio sound via my Iphone but will get honest feedback documented.
Thanks for all your help (and patience) everyone.

Couple more- one showing that the cover/flap still lays flat with the sub under it.
The second is the bass booster. Its on the driver's side dash just to the right/bottom of the steering wheel. (My Cb sits right under the steering wheel). This little dash panel costs maybe $25 to replace so cutting into it with a Dremel isn't a biggie. Love my Cb here.

Hey Jen,
If you need non-factory radio testers, let me know. I have an aftermarket Kicker sub that I am not fond of, have been wanting to replace.

Left the top down in the rain (oops) and everything got drenched. Sub made it through no issues.

I've got plenty of mods to hold me off, I can wait. My only concern will be that this will rattle the hell out of my tool box its mounted under!

Dynamat the tool box LOL. But yah- that's a lot of loose metal parts. Rattling the junk in your trunk.

So does this rattle around a lot in the tool box? Also will this be available to just buy the enclosure??? because this seems like a great idea! Just don't want it to rattle around and make a lot of noise :P

Doesn't rattle one iota. We'll be supplying a high density thin foam backer (aka Dynamat) which each sub. we sell. In my 2012 I don't have carpet once you remove the stock tool enclosure- I believe earlier models have carpet underneath. The mat (or carpet) will prevent the sub. from rattling against the metal body. Once the sub. is bolted down using the existing hole it does NOT budge or rattle. I've rock crawled, driven at stupid speeds over bumps and thrown my Jeep over hills I probably shouldn't have- and its solid as a rock.
Now- once you put the cover back down- if you put something directly over the sub it can rattle because the bass moves it. But I consider that a positive.

This seems awesome and I am in the process of overhauling my sound, so you've got my attention. The one question is, how does it sound? That's really all that matters to me.

Having it stealth and and such is awesome, but if it isn't a significant improvement in sound over the factory, it doesn't serve it's purpose.

Does it boom with the top off? It seems like a very small enclosure to get anything impacting from. Really curious, looks awesome btw.

Yes, it certainly booms. And I have the worst case scenario- 2 door JK soft top, no rear seat, stock HU. I can hear it plenty with the top off on the highway. Small, shallow drivers & speakers is what my FIL specializes in (and holds several patents on). When companies need serious bass in small spaces- they come to him for either design- or design and production. (You'd be surprised at whats really inside your brand name speaker box). Its a definite improvement over the Infinity system and Alpine. Small box- lots of bass.

I've heard her prototype and it sounds really good! I didn't know a sub that small could sound so good. I always thought you needed a 10, 12"+ to get that kind of bass. They've come a long way with the compact subs.
