GPS crapped out - Help!

Hey guys,

I am halfway between Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada, but the GPS stopped working about 400 miles ago.

All I get is the "Guided by GARMIN" blank screen. The GPS clock stopped working too. It is now 3pm but it thinks it is 10pm.

I disconnected the battery already, but it didn't do anything.

The I-5 is closed due to severe snow and am trying to figure out an alternate route, so I am relying on Google Maps at the moment.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Aldo

PS: the Jeep warranty expired last week!

Looking at my atlas, (that's like google earth printed out for you young guys), If you haven't gone past Weed Ca, you might try US97, but I don't know that it would be any better.

Try using Google maps on your phone. If you are able to get on here you can get on maps most likely. If not stop at a gas station, Walmart etc and get an atlas.

I just downloaded Waze to my iPad. Tried getting directions for my trip tomorrow: it spun around for awhile and spat out an error message..."Unable to calculate directions. Try again later" LOL ...or maybe not...

Did the Russians shoot down a few satellites? Never had so many GPS issues in one day.

I was going to drive back to Redding and detour to CA-299 east and CA-89 north to get back onto I-5 near past Dunsmuir, but the wind almost blew the Jeep over the side of the Shasta bridge, so I am spending the night at Shasta Lake, hoping things improve tomorrow.

Yup. This the second headunit in that Jeep. The original one lost the ability to remember radio presents, so the dealer replaced it with a new one about 1.5 years ago. Now that the Jeep warranty expired the GPS goes kaput on the 2nd one.

Thanks for the link.

Interestingly, it's cold here, as described on that vid.

I'll try all that other voodoo described by other members tomorrow, and see if it exorcises the evil spirits that have taken possession of my GPS.

Stop at a Walmart in the morning and pick up a garmin gps and set it on the dash. Most come with free lifetime map updates. Coast to coast, canada to mexico, and the ability to load micro cards with offroad trails, mine has never let me down.
good luck on the rest of your trip

Made it to Vancouver in one piece!

Left Shasta Lake at 4am: the I-5 was closed to everyone except 4WD vehicles with traction tires. I was the only vehicle when I approached the checkpoint around 4:30am. The officer pointed his flashlight from about 100 feet; as soon as he saw it was a Jeep he waved me right through.

It was a nasty combination of snow, ice and fog. It took me 3 hours to cover 100 miles. On the other side I found about 500 semis double parked around a Rest Area, lined for miles. They had camped for the night waiting for the restriction to be lifted.

The GPS still don't work. I tried disconnecting the battery and touching both cables together; I also tried some voodoo that was suggested of pressing two buttons on the HU and opening the door...to no effect.

Contacted my dealer: they are willing to fix it out of "goodwill" (my warranty expired last week) when I get back in a month.
